President Obama declares this June Gay and Lesbian Pride Month

I'm happy with this, but I'm also wondering if it's a sop to his LGBT supporters who aren't thrilled with his wishy-washiness on the gay marriage issue.
Call me cynical but I think you're spot on J Bryson.

In Obama's recent interview on NBC he says he does not believe the government should step in and define marriage when that's exactly what needs to happen. That's exactly what needs to happen when constitutional rights are being denied. Obama has the balls to claim the federal government shouldn't be involved yet he won't repeal DOMA!?!?! Not to mention Obama's waffling on his promise to end the "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy.

And Dick Cheney supports gay marriage. Way to drop the ball yet again Obama.

Heh... Sanction a gay pride month when gays and lesbians still don't have equal rights. But Obama has also declared June "Great Outdoors" month so I suppose that should make everything alright.

I don't know if someone made that document up or if it is authentic.
I don't know how you can fail to know that when the link to the White House website was already posted.

But I do know that the most hostile people in the world would not favor this declaration, and would see it as an insult to their God and a cowardly act on the part of the President.
It's high time Evangelical Christians and Catholic bishops got over themselves.

It is another point in favour of the Gay and Lesbian Pride Month.

This may be the most dangerous act he has done. This issue is extremely hostile on both sides. Stupid political agendas cause such damage.
Yes, freeing the slaves was not popular either, but it was the right thing to do too.

The "M" word is noticeably absent from the proclamation.

 This is where if I were homosexual I would take this as a slap in the face, as its not a month free of discrimination that is being asked of here, it's EQUAL rights so to me its just another way of avoiding the real issue at hand.

Yeah, it's a nice gesture, except that it's kind of a consolation for not having equal rights.

Exactly. I'm not part of the community, but from the outside it looks like "Well, we're not going to give you all of your rights, but you're still very nice people."

Yep.

On the other hand, smooth politician that he is, he could be hedging his bets. In the end, as in all civil rights advances in history, it will be the Supreme Court who decides, after the issue percolates through the state courts. That might not even happen during his first term as president. Assuming for a moment he isn't really against equal rights for homosexuals, another possible explanation for avoiding the M-word is that he doesn't want to alienate the red states, but he still wants to make an unambiguous personal statement to the civil rights community that he's, like, totally cool with gay, and some of his best friends are gay, etc.

That's what I was thinking. I'm not a fan of presidential proclamations or Congressional simple resolutions. Every time they do this I think they could be focusing on the more important things.

But I think Obama doing something the past presidents would not touch is still better than complete silence. Another small chink out of the old guard armor protecting themselves against the existence of gay citizens.

So far, this story has gotten more views than any other single story I've published on Examiner. We have a lively discussion going on in the comments, with some strong views. You are all invited to weigh in.

Like the civil rights movement of the 60s? Or women's suffrage of the early 20th century? Is equality and liberty really a "stupid political agenda"?
This stupid political agenda, is quite a clever move by Obama.
Obama is preparing the ground for future changes to be made on his presidential agenda.
what might be considered stupid is looking at this move as a single political action, it is one in the chain of many, and will open the door for a smoother journey for civil rights for the GLBT community. in a way it is setting the record straight about the natural legitimacy of every citizen.

Which Examiner?

I'm familiar with the Atlanta Examiner but I guess that's not the one you are speaking of.

That's exactly how I take it.
