Physical retaliation (to being attacked) should be determined by the the attacker's weight, size, durability and threat level.

That's why I like grappling and submission holds. Size and weight do matter some, but the goal is the same of using their momentum against them and making them wish you'd just hurry up and rip their arm off to end the pain.

Um, do I get it that do you guys who voted the first option have no special compassion for women vs. men? Please correct me if I'm wrong, but that's what I understand from it.

To us Westerners, in our courts we tend to not issue physical punishment unless it's a country that is lagging behind and still has the death sentence. Many Westerners even frown upon corporal punishment for children, with it being outlawed in a number of places. It's a question in which cultural differences are going to make a difference, because over here a first-time offender for shop-lifting is likely to get mandatory community service and a fine over jail time, and there will certainly be no physical punishments assigned. It's not really an issue of compassion towards the differences between men and women, but rather that we tend to not use physical punishment in the legal system, and in regards to children corporal/physical punishment is falling out of favor even in America.

Scandinavian countries have fines based on how much you make. Here in Finland you can be pay fifteen days fine for example. Some poor people can get a few hundred euros fine where a rich businessman can get hundred thousand fine.

I do agree with such a model. It has a far less chance of being burdensome to the poor while having a strong enough burden for the wealthy as to not be a "slap on the wrist" fine like we see in America.

Depends on the jail system of the country and the jail. Most jails in the world don't try to help the inmates, but rather punish them and keep them "out of circulation" or even use them to make money.

I guess it depends what I will be lashed with. But I'm looking at 20 for 6 months. That will mean about three weeks max of recovery and then I can get on with my life.

20 sounds like a lower number than most that give such punishments.

What numbers have you seen? Remember it all depends on the length of jail time you would be trading for the lashings. I could take more if the jail time I'm avoiding was longer. I would really be willing to take a whole lot of lashings to stay out of prison.

Hmm 40 lashings every two weeks. 40-100 lashings once. I think women are given less lashings in countries that use beating as punishment.

In the news I've seen male and unrelated female being close to each other being punished both with 5 lashings. That's the smallest I've seen. I'm just glad we don't have such a punishment here.

I thought that way, however, because I believe women are less tolerant to punishment, especially physically, than men. I believe women are kinder at heart that they mentally take it harder than men, right next to physically normally. All that was also based on my heart, rather than my head, so I think this is a factor too. But let's be real, we do have hearts, right?
