Random Homeless Person Dies Today.

I'm sorry to see you using the death of a random homeless person as an excuse to put down your fellow RF members.

I just do not understand why people make a big deal when a celebrity dies. I never have. It's just not my thing. Celebrities don't mean a **** to me. In fact I find the whole culture of celebrity repugnant.

I usually don't, but people like Robin Williams I do think are admirable. Not all celebrities are false idols, but most are, unfortunately. And I do agree that much of the celebrity culture is toxic.

People know & like him.
That's how mourning works.
Those who don't care needn't mourn.
You resent it? Tough titties.

It is akin to idol worship and I just can't bring myself to do it.

Well, I happen to dislike the constant attention to the details of celebrities lives -- and the making of them as being "larger than life" or somehow to be looked up to and imitated on all matters. I think Americans over-do it a lot.

However, there is something about certain celebrities that are part of our lives, in that we may have good memories of times in our lives involving their artistic work. Even though we do not know them, personally, there is some connection to our lives if we appreciate the artistic contribution they have made to our lives.

In expressing sadness, for me, it is expressing sorrow at the passing (and possibly the suffering, if it was, indeed, suicide) of someone that has brought some joy (through entertainment) to my life. It is also the recognition of them as a person, and not only as an entertainer.

So you have to insult others remorse to make yourself happy?

i think it was a good attempt to ease your mourning ..as well as ours. seriously, by saying this you made death common again and made us get angry with ourselves (speaking of those who are sensitive enough to mourn a stranger's death) for neglecting so many deaths just because we arent aware of them and most important of all you made us get angry with you. Anger and sadness hardly can stay together in a moment. anger beats sadness. You dont feel sadness when you are angry. many people, thats why, subconsciously choose anger and are all the time angry.
i think you are a rather empathic person but it is really ok we are sad at the moment.

People acting like human beings.

Some people finding that reason to put down others.

That's pretty much how it works. When it comes to famous people you're a big fan of, you form an emotional connection with them/their work. They're inspirations and heroes to you. The people I've been the most upset about dying are: Left Eye, Aaliyah (I was a kid when they died), Dimebag Darrell (I cried when I heard he was he was killed) and Whitney Houston (I'm still upset about her passing). I was sad when Anna Nicole Smith died, too. Not because I was a big fan of her, really, but because people were making fun of her death and celebrating it and that was a horrible way to treat a human being that, while troubled, never hurt anyone and who was obviously murdered (along with her beloved son) for her money (like Michael Jackson).

Aye, we're each entitled to our own preferences.
They're all valid.

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
I know his work.
That's enuf for me.
Yes. It was Robin Williams gift to the fans through his work and talent. I think you can know a person through a venue like that, even though on a personal level for which a fan is still a complete stranger, nevertheless there is still a connection between a celebrity and their fans that is distinct and unique in it's own way.
