I think it was too close regionally and time-wise to the gang-rape and murder of the woman in India. Gallows humor at times is used, which I've seen and witnessed, when the ugly side of humanity is explored, and I think this is no different.
I do appreciate the explanation and the apology, though I certainly see it as more than tasteless.
