This is why a good conceptual foundation is so important. Our sensory data enters the brain, is massaged, and added onto this foundation. If the foundation was not built to code, or was not designed for the extra load, it may still work in the short term, but major rehab will be needed in the future; times change.Your questions are trapping themselves.
PERCEPTION IS CONCEPTION.
What this means is that when nerve impulses are being sent to the brain in response of sensory stimuli from the world around us, the brain "cognates" it into a set of ideas and then places it within a whole network of set ideas that it holds, and that we call "reality".
That "reality" is imaginary. It only exists within our minds. And in that sense it is an illusion. We don't perceive it as such because it's the only experience of actual reality we have ... of the reality that exists apart from our perceptions. But it is nevertheless just an illusory concept of actual reality. It is not actual reality, itself.
We are so unused to recognizing this that we very often fight to deny it, or we just can't grasp how it could be so. We 'believe in' our imagined illusion of reality so fervently that we simply can't accept that it's not actual reality.
At one time, before telescopes, you could only see the heavens with the naked eyes. Based on that limited data, a conceptual foundations was built that placed the earth in the middle of the universe, since to the senses, the earth was huge compared to those tiny lights. Since the foundation was set that way, all future building; seeing new data, automatically aligned with this base assumption. Since all the culture learned the same foundation, it seemed self evident and real to all.
We see what we expect to see, unless you go into the sub basement of house of knowledge, and check out the footings, cornerstones and support beams, to make sure they were designed for the load and/or the load placement. This will help us make sure our reality image is not just an illusion, due to the self structuring of thought on a weak foundation, that nevertheless still gives us internal affirmation for collective group think.
As a visual analogy, say we have a magnetic statue of the goddess Venus. We throw handfuls of iron filings at it. The iron filing are alike data that will even curve back and stick to the stature, allowing its foundational structure, to serve as the base for building outward. If we change the stature, so does the data organization, for our reality affirmation.
