Religion and Politics are Serious Topics

I fail to see how having a central axis of meaningfulness in one's life that addresses profound existential questions is silliness and ridiculousness, nor do I see how social institutions that arise spontaneously out of our species' nature as a social animal and help govern essential social affairs are silly and ridiculous either.

I suppose some people see a drama where other's are seeing a comedy. I'd rather be the one laughing. And usually am.

If you took the image I use here to represent myself, that would be a sirius mistake.

If any other species had its priorities as out of whack as we do, it would go extinct in a flash.

I don't think we will go extinct but at some point a large quantity of people will have to disappear due to the direct consequences of human stupidity. One day people will be forced to understand that you can't eat or breathe money, the most valuable things in life can't be quantified in currency and focusing on the lives of famous people is nothing but a waste of precious time.

Religion, I see the sentiment. Politics, not so much.

They both can be ''serious'' subjects. If someone considers their religious beliefs serious, then they are, to that person. The problem I have with this thread premise, is that it seems to give ''meaning'' to ones subjective interpretations, of what could, or may not be, something that someone takes seriously.

Sounds like you have a pretty serious problem with the thread premise.

I wonder why it is that the things that most people generally consider the most serious, are actually the silliest and most ridiculous. If any other species had its priorities as out of whack as we do, it would go extinct in a flash.

I wonder how much consideration you've given to the possibility that your assertion about the actual nature of these two topics, is itself your own subjective consideration that has the same validity as the assertions you accuse of being just that.

I also wonder how you know that other species don't place importance on these two matters, both of which boil down to forms of tribal allegiance. We're not the only tribally-social species on the planet, after all.

They're not assertions, they're observations.

We'll talk when chimps or dolphins create a version of Fox News or mega churches.

Yes likely those folks who didn't spend all their time acquiring as much wealth as they could.
Collect up and control all of the resources so that you and yours will be the ones who survive. :smilingimp:

I wonder what should have higher priority than understanding the purpose of life and living to that purpose?

Fair enough. Personally, I'd regard that as a false dichotomy. That, and science fiction and fantasy are the best genres anyway. :p

I suppose they can both be serious subjects, but at least politics affects the tangible world. Either way, there's always a time to laugh, and always a time to take things seriously.
