Religious tolerance and biblical contradictions

Why does it seem like every religion has no tolerance for another? I know of only a few religions that are tolerant, and actually preach tolerance, of other religions are wicca, buddism, shinto, and a few others.

Religions that definitley do NOT preach tolerance of any sort is Christianity, Catholosism and so on.

Why?

It's not a matter of "tolerance" but beliefs......;)
I know what I believe but I respect other peoples beliefs, it has nothing to do with tolerance......

Many Christians (to which Catholicism belongs, by the way) do preach tolerance, as do other Abrahamic religions. It depends on the sect, and on the person.

One thing to keep in mind for religious studies: religion is not found exclusively in Scripture.

Now, if you want a "why" as to whether or not there is such intolerance, ask yourself why you do not tolerate things you do not tolerate, and you will have your answer. Keep in mind: that answer can be misapplied, as so many do.

Intolerance is born from prejudice and bias. Prejudice and bias are born from barriers on the brain. Barriers on the brain are caused from intelligence or emotions. Intelligence and emotions are born from life experience and the evironment. Life experience and the environment are caused by mankind.

Tolerance is born from understanding without prejudice or bias in it. No prejudice and bias means a balanced brain. A balanced brain is created by intelligence and the emotions. Intelligence and the emotions are born from life experience and the environment. Life experience and the environment are caused by mankind.

Every single person alive has predjudice and bias. No person on this forum can say they can't. What I mean by tolerance is not calling something like wicca evil, or preaching against homosexuality. Accepting is tolerating.

And all through out the christian bible, it never says any thing about religious tolerance. In the book of Joshua, God authorizes the genocide of the cannanites for being pagan.

In exodus, god says to put to death those who practice magic. He made the jews out to be devils. That doesn't sound like religious tolerance to me. And while I do understand that those were different times, many still take those words to heart because they were written in a bible by MAN, not God.

Like I said, not many religions take you as you are.

I'm a Christian, and I do tolerate other religions. I simply disagree with many of their doctrines. That does in no way make me intolerant. It means I'm knowlegeable and discerning.

To listen to the atheists on here sometimes it makes me wonder who is more intolerant of whom...

As an atheist in a primarily theistic culture, I can tell you that atheists generally have a lot more to tolerate.

Excuses, excuses, excuses. No one makes you learn doctrine. No one makes you tithe. No one uses your beliefs to gain donations or votes... I believe your very attitude has proven my point. You feel slighted and you want to make others feel as you do... Sorry, I can no longer feel as you do.

You believe incorrectly. I don't feel slighted in the least. I'm simply pointing out the simple fact that atheists have more to be tolerant of a in a theistic culture than theists do, so, logically, they're more tolerant. Your response has revealed far more about your attitude than mine.

Every single person alive has predjudice and bias.

That is a perception, children are not born with bias and prejudice and it extends further from there.

No person on this forum can say they can't.

That is another perception, I can think of a number of posters who fit this persona, and without having hard evidence to back up this statement, would near guarantee that many of these people practice some form of meditation.

What I mean by tolerance is not calling something like wicca evil, or preaching against homosexuality. Accepting is tolerating.

I get it, like not calling religions evil or judging them?

And all through out the christian bible, it never says any thing about religious tolerance. In the book of Joshua, God authorizes the genocide of the cannanites for being pagan.

Did God per se authorize this? Or was it something mankind used to unite the people? Remembering where Christianity is concerned, Jesus was sent to turn the Jews around in their thinking. The Jews wanted to fight everybody in the name of God and the Jesus and Co. wanted to love everybody in the name of the same God.

In exodus, god says to put to death those who practice magic. He made the jews out to be devils. That doesn't sound like religious tolerance to me. And while I do understand that those were different times, many still take those words to heart because they were written in a bible by MAN, not God.

Did God per se say this? Or is this what mankind said at the time?

What can I say, people either accept or reject knowledge handed down to them to a greater or lesser degree. You would be surprised how many parents still smack or punish their children when there is greater knowledge available.

Like I said, not many religions take you as you are.

Do you mean like, not many people take religions as they are and want to change them or abolish them?

I'm an atheist. I was forced to go to chuch by parents, and attend a catholic high school. In the last ellection there was no way to follow the campaign of either candidate without hereing about a non-existent god. People do force other's to learn of their doctrines in this country.

Yeah I know what you mean humanistheart, as a child I was forced to do chores, funny my parents thought it was the best thing for me.

I am assuming you are from the US, didn't you know about God per se, before the last election or any of the doctrines you alleged were raised before the last election? I suppose it is because I am in another country, so how did these people force you to learn their doctrines, did they hold a gun to your head or perhaps threaten to kill your family if you didn't comply?

Well footprint, you can't possibly be contending that theists have more to tolerate than athiests in this country.

Certainly not from your perception Humanistheart. Albeit from the path of rational and reasonable accumulation of knowledge when critical thinking is applied to it, both the atheist and the theist are exactly the same, I think it has something to do with the fact that both groups consist of humans.

Right FP, because chores and forced indoctrination into a religion are the same thing. Funny, many parents do not know what is 'best' for children, as my countries social services are well aware of. It shouldn't matter what your parents think are best, it should matter what actually is best.

When you cannot be up to date on the affairs of your government without being familiar with a particular religion that presents the kind of issue that stranger and myself are refering to. But to someone who thinks the only definition of force involves a gun, well, *edit*.
