Royal Wedding Coverage

Is this completely out of line? I was really looking forward to watching the satire....

''For a monarchy to be issuing decrees about how the media should cover them seems quite out of keeping with modern democratic times … but I suppose that's exactly what the monarchy is."

The Chasers, a popular satirical group, were going to perform a live satirical commentary on ABC here in Australia, of the Royal Wedding of William and Kate. But it has been cancelled.

"Just two days before the wedding, conditions issued by Associated Press Television News said footage of the ceremony from Westminster Abbey could not be used "in any drama, comedy, satirical or similar entertainment program or content".

Kathryn

It was on fire when I laid down on it.
I think the whole brouhaha is weird, bizarre, and yet somehow riveting. I hate to admit it, but I'll be watching the whole ridiculous thing go down. It's like watching a train wreck in slow motion!

The satire or the stopping of it?

If the first, the answer is no, not even close. Such things actually deserve to be made fun of.

If the second, then yeah, of course its out of line.

I agree.
I meant that the cancellation is ridiculous.

Anyone can make fun of it all they like but its a bit much to expect them to let you use the BBCs live feed if they dont want you to, what do they want their cake and eat it.

Crack jokes and parody it who cares but i suspect its copyrighted and they can let who they want have it, or buy it, whatever they do on these occasions.

I'm sick of hearing about the royal wedding.
Might be because I'm an anti-monarchist though. ;)

People should be able to make fun of it as much as they like.

Well, if this is how any similar situation is handled, i guess you have a point. If not, and its an exception for this case, i think thats really messed up.

My wife wants to watch the wedding. I don't get it and I find that even the thought of watching it bores me to tears. That is time off my life I can't get back so I plan to be doing something totally different, productive and worthwhile with my time.......Maybe I'll go bowling...:p

True. But the pressure came from the royal family itself apparently, which is why BBC forced the cancellation.

I agree. Which is why a satire of the event would have been wonderful!

Well, I think the wedding is a nice opportunity for people to celebrate, so I'm all for the hoopla.

I wouldn't squash the freedom to parody it though.

The Brits used to build stuff................all they got left is their royalty. And it baffles me that kings, queens, etc still exist in this current era.

Not sure who owns the rights to the live feed , Its not a very important subject to me this wedding but i suppose i like things right so do you have a source for the royal pressure.

That's nice. The vatican is nice looking too. But for all the millions of dollars that both have in gold, you could finance a small country.
While artistry and tradition are nice, it isn't solving economic dilemas. This doesn't help the struggling family who needs food, education and health care.

I can understand the importance of that, really. There is nothing wrong with cherishing one's history.

What i fail to see any point to though, is why keep the negative aspect of that tradition. I mean why does the concept of 'royal family' still having any form of value?

Who cares that a 'prince' is getting married for it to be such a big deal?

I mean if people basically see them as some form of cute things from the past, i guess thats not such a big deal.

But if they have any form of power or authority, thats not good. As the very concept of monarchy is pretty much an insult.

The royal family have no power, they are basically Ambassadors, they do a lot for charity and campaigners for the enviroment,Prince Charles has done a lot for architecture, especially for new developments and organic Farming.

The wedding isn't really a big deal in itself to me but it has drawn people from all over the world and there is a feel good atmosphere here, the only drawback is its going to be harder to get to the Bar because they are full.
