Russia's real aim in attacking Ukraine

In other words, Russia started the war as a way to attack the US indirectly. If Finland and Sweden join NATO, Russia will have lost no matter the Ukraine result.

Russian foreign minister says Russia's war with Ukraine is 'meant to put an end' to US world domination, NATO expansion

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Monday that Russia's unprovoked war with Ukraine is "meant to put an end" to US-led global domination and the expansion of NATO, according to a report.

"Our special military operation is meant to put an end to the unabashed expansion [of NATO] and the unabashed drive towards full domination by the US and its Western subjects on the world stage," Lavrov told the state-owned television news channel Rossiya 24, according to a translation from Russian state-run media outlet RT.

Additionally, Lavrov accused the United States of international law violations due to what he said were America's attempts to impose its own "rules-based international order," according to the report.

I think they just want more coastline and they want to make their Crimea expansion permanent. They can now negotiate a peace that will leave Russia with Crimea.

The United States already owns the Mediterranean.
If we let Russia own the Black Sea...I guess they are even.

I do not.;)
I just want to understand why Russia and USA can't become allies, partners, friends.
But your doubting that USA (a NATO member)
would take interest in Russia invading Italy
suggests real animosity.

Our leaders pay too much attention to the internal
affairs of other countries. If Russia & China want to
violate human rights in their own countries, I'd rather
not have their oppression of Jews, gays, Uighurs, &
political opponents create hostilities. But so it goes.
And then too, there's the whole invading other countries
thingie. That is something that we should oppose.

Countries on the Black Sea are not ours to
trade away. Have you no respect for the
sovereignty of Ukraine, Turkey, Moldova,
Georgia, Bulgaria, & Romania?

I side with the people. Not with the leaders.
So I side with the American people, the Russian people, the German people.

You're a newbie here, so you don't know...
I prefer that no one invade other countries.
So do I.
I wasn't referring to you personally (especially as you used "we" when referring to your group). And I assumed with "we" you meant the US.

"We" (USians) do object to other countries invading each other.
However, "we" do not all agree about US military adventurism.
So your "you" would not include me in desire for a monopoly
on invasions.

The Russian people overwhelmingly approve of
the invasion of Ukraine. So I side against them.
It appears like the majority of Russians do approve of the invasion, but I am not sure I would call it “overwhelming”.

But they have been lied to, information has been strictly controlled. It is not fair to condemn the general populace.

I presume the thread title is intended ironically. If Lavrov states what the "real" aim is, you can be 100% certain it is untrue, but serves instead some cynical public relations purpose or other.

Sometimes truth and a cynical aim coincide.
