Safe Spaces and RF

FWIW, I have found that ignore works just as well as any special area. If you stop feeding the trolls (ignoring them) then they soon lose interest. I have three members on ignore at this point and I find the RF experience far, far nicer, more intelligent and rewarding. Let's face it. For every 'snowflake' there's at least one 'troll' hell bent on making their lives miserable. There's simply no need for that kind of negativity in my life. No need for the overly quarrelsome verbal sodomites trying to stick it to you all the time.

Neo Deist

Th.D. & D.Div. h.c.
I use the Deism DIR to define deistic concepts and beliefs without the external noise from opposition. Those interested in deism can read about it without being distracted by naysayers. I have had a few people jump into the DIR and blast a post that I made, but the mods/admins are usually good about cleaning it up.

However, I am not afraid of conflict or a good argument, that much should be obvious! I'll go 12 rounds with someone if I have a point to prove. :D

I think in this regard RF is a nice microcosm. The DIRs are like private dinner parties, and hosts are free to curtail speech and limit visitors.

And the rest of RF is "the commons". And free speech oughtn't be restricted in "the commons" so that people won't be offended. I'm not the first to say it, no one has a right to not be offended.

Within reason. No need for bigoted or hate speech anywhere on the forum. On any forum, for that matter.

But who's to decide? A whole lot of people thought "The Satanic Verses" should have been banned.

Now I'm pretty sure I know the kind of thing you're referring to, but I'm proud to say that I'm bigoted against pedophiles. Should I not have said that?

I think the word should be 'biased' or 'predjudiced' in that case. No worries, I'm equally offended by them. There are laws against pedophilia because they impinge on the rights of others.

bigotry: intolerance toward those who hold different opinions from oneself.

@Revoltingest

I don't need to know any pedophiles to be intolerant of their opinions about sex with children.

Did "The Satanic Verses" impinge on the rights of others? There seems to be an idea floating around lately that people have the right not to be offended. Sorry, that's not a right.

That isn't bigotry though...it's opposing actions which harm others.
The reason I asked about knowing any is that it becomes more complex.
I've covered before my leasing an apartment to a convicted pedophile.
In that case, I treated him fairly as a tenant, but also doing my due diligence
to ensure that he met all legal, contractual, & other requirements.
Yes....the 2 of us discussed what he did...in creepy detail.

Would you say that I could be bigoted against Neo-Nazis? Once again, the definition of bigotry is:

"intolerance toward those who hold different opinions from oneself."

We've reached a point where using different definitions is causing the conflict.

I am not familiar with them to comment one way or the other. Unless they are calling for something like a human sacrifice, then probably not. I'm not sure how this relates to pedophilia, but I'm sure you do. I was only commenting on that.

As for rights: sure you have the right to feel offended. Why the hell not? The lady on the news was wearing a dress that was offensive to me. Really? Stripes and plaids in the same garment is simply horrible. It was also my right to change the channel or make fun of her choice if I wanted to. I chose the latter. :D :D :D Unless your desires impinge on the rights of others, I don't have a problem with you pursuing happiness.

I'm not making my definition up, it's the first one that my search engine returned. What definition are you using?
I'm not accusing you of anything like that.
Just that "intolerance" can mean all sorts of different actions.

"The Satanic Verses" was a novel that came out about 30 years ago, and it was critical of Islam and Muhammad. It caused riots and a fatwa against the author and many in the church and in politics called the NOVEL blasphemy and called for it to be banned. Let me say this again, it was a NOVEL.

So who's to judge what should be censored?

Le plongeur avec attitude...
And if I write a novel critical of Jesus, would you call for it to be censored?
Why would I do that? Unless it called for my death, then it did not infringe on my rights. I'm trying to be clear here. I may not buy it just as I don't buy Hawking's schlock, but I don't care if you read it. Why should I?
