Sasha Baron Cohen | Harmless Fun or Criminally Offensive

Smoke

Done here.
C mon, the guy is funny as hell! Sasha Baron Cohen is like the George Carlin of our times. His outrageous characters and the ridiculous things he say and does is what makes him hilarious. I mean, who else would put their bare *** in front of Eminem's face and live to tell about it? Who else rides around in an ice cream truck with a bear in it to scare children? LOL
George Carlin was the George Carlin of our time.

Sasha Baron Cohen is the Sam Newfield of our time.

I have a friend who doesn't like Ben Stiller to the point that he refuses to see any movie with him in it. I don't get it. He may not be the funniest guy alive, but he's ok, and he has some great movies. The saddest part is that that means he's never seen Dodgeball, which is one of the greatest comedies in recent times.

I also don't understand the condescension towards dumb comedy. It has its place just like action movies do. I don't watch an Arnold Schwarzennegger movie for the substance, just like I don't watch Dumb and Dumber for the substance. That doesn't mean you can't enjoy them along with smarter funny movies, though.

He's also never seen the Royal Tanenbaum's which is a great movie in my opinion.

I can't compare Cohen to Pryor, Carlin or Hicks. He doesn't begin to reach that level of blunt social commentary and humor.

My biggest issue with Cohen is how much of what he does is staged and the level of dishonesty he takes, much like documentarian Michael Moore, in order to be entertaining.

Although I really like Cohen in Sweeney Todd and do find quite a bit of what I've seen of his characters to be funny when it reaches a level of dishonesty at the expense of others, especially when he reaps such monetary rewards and they receive nothing, my respect is diminished. The Romanians misrepresented in Borat, lied to and made fools of is not something to be congratulated or rewarded.

It's the intellectual equivalent of building strawmen to poke fun at as opposed to the aforementioned comedians tackling actual relevant issues.

But dangit, this Bruno interview is great:

I'm sorry, but SBC is nowhere near Carlin. Carlin was smart and clever. SBC just acts like an idiot to get reactions out of people.

That's true, although that's not really up there on my "must-see" list. Plus, I don't think he'd like it very much. I know he'd like Dodgeball.

Cohen is brilliant. Maybe people will recognize this thirty years later - as they did with Carlin.

Actually, Carlin was pretty popular 30 years ago, while he was doing his thing.

SBC is not brilliant. You might find him funny, but he's far from brilliant. For instance, I love Will Ferrell, but he's not brilliant, he's just funny. Carlin is an example of a brilliant comedian.

As is Cohen. But the point is the controversy was still there and Carlin's brilliance often wasn't recognized then as is Cohen's now.

Obviously that's a matter of interpretation.
