How could Copernicus be so stupid as to not realise this?
Throw away my science books and get out the Koran, it's easy

From the article it shows that he also believes the moon landings also never happened. We have people like this in Christian Fundamentalists so it's not Islam's fault. It seems conspiracy theories are the next big religion, if someone managed to make a religion out of them.

Oh, I'm sure, but I am also acquainted with a very intelligent lady who is a foaming at the mouth conspiracy theorist and very much an atheist. She is actually a real trip to be around because a lot of the stuff she says does make a certain amount of sense - it just then goes right off the edge into LaLaLand. :rolleyes:o_O:confused:o_O:rolleyes:

In regards to the OP, well, it's pretty low hanging fruit to find "scholars" who say silly things. I don't think too many Muslims take them seriously.

What? Me worry?
You know, I think he may be right. No matter how high I jump up I always end up in the same spot. Wonder how he feels about the earth being flat?

Sure, I didn't mean to imply all of the conspiracy folks are religious or theist. :) The first paranoid one I've ever met was a New Age-kind of guy. He basically had all these beliefs that you see on youtube before there was a youtube. Evil polytheist Atlanteans faking moon landings type of stuff. I didn't buy it so he thought I must be part of the conspiracy. :D

Don't know.

Can one cynically paint Islam and Muslims with the idiocy of some cleric and still be applauded by secularists despite such petty bigotry?

Can one ridicule someone whose ludicrous ultra-literalist views prevent him from acknowledging a very simple truth without people assuming it is a blanket statement that intends to mock all Muslims everywhere? Or should we patronisingly assume that most Muslims don't find such characters equally ridiculous and deem people who highlight such idiocy as anti-Muslim bigots?

When you believe in magic it's probably pretty easy to dismiss the cause-and-effect of physics.

It's funny how everyone can claim they are clerics!

It is also funny some people forget the specific person that stated the idiocy, and blame it on the Quran and Islam. Seriously, people!

...but no one in this thread has done that [as of yet, of course].

You're absolutely right. It's a strategy. If someone wants to say it but reads my post, they might change their minds :p

.... or maybe they will feel insulted and say it?

Hmm!

Qur'an confirms that the earth rotates :

[77:25] Have we not made the earth kifaata ( كفاتا ) ?

Kifaata is a verbal noun meaning an object which is flying/running etc..

Yet another verse proves that all celestial bodies are in motion :

[021:033] It is He Who created the Night and the Day, and the sun and the moon: all swim along an orbit.

I think only the this Saudi cleric in this video can be blame for his own ignorance to science. I don't think any education could help him, because I think he's already too set in his way, and won't admit himself he is wrong, out of pious pride or ego.

Islamic clerics or Islamic scholars are not "scientists", unless they had received higher education in specific scientific fields.

I don't know this cleric educational background, but I don't think he had benefit from his education.
