Seven percent of Americans believe chocolate milk comes from brown cows.

We Never Know

No Slack
I almost put this in the jokes thread but... Evidently there was a little survey done on it o_O
From Sept 2019......

"According to a recent survey, seven percent of Americans believe chocolate milk comes from brown cows.

The survey was conducted by the Innovation Center of US Dairy in April. 1,000 adults 18 and over were asked questions about the role milk plays in their daily lives, Food & Wine reported.

The study found 48% of respondents weren’t sure where chocolate milk came from. Seven percent thought chocolate milk only comes from brown cows.

That adds up to about 16.4 million people, more than the population of Ohio.

The Washington Post linked the study to past studies that consistently show many Americans have no idea where their food comes from. For example, a study in the 1990s found that nearly 20% of people did not know hamburgers are made from beef."

My husband had a coworker who genuinely believed that cows lay eggs, and they got into quite an argument about it. (I wish I could say she was just being silly, but she was not.)

Of all the nutty things people believe, this one is acceptable.

The survey may have been poorly designed.

A question like this would tempt me to put the wrong answer down. You give me a survey asking if I think that chocolate milk from brown cows, and I might think your survey is insulting me. It would need three things. First it would need for me to be motivated to be honest. Secondly it would need a scale that measured how honest I was. Third it would need a scale that measured how badly I wanted to crack jokes, because that question about brown cows is just like an itch that begs for scratching.

On the other hand yes some people may believe that chocolate milk comes from brown cows, but the survey could easily have +- 14% error if its asking these kinds of questions.

Whether or not the survey was really well done, given what I know of the American people, it's totally a reasonable result.

Speaking of surveys, a bit of sick humor

One thing I do know, we had a bunch of school youth come to our house to make pizza... they didn't know what a green pepper looked like or that corn came on a cob.

(They were accustomed to just seeing frozen cut peppers and shucked frozen corn)

In the times of MAGA, flat earthers, Qanon, anti-vaxxers, pizzagate, big steal, climate change denial, creationists, etc... 7% is a surprisingly low number.

And, of course, with the not so surprising low numbers of atheists... it is quite understandable that the amount of chocolate brown cow believers are in the same range. :D

I was a very firm believer in the Brown Cows Make Chocolate Milk hypothesis back in the 80s. Back when I was three.

We really need an RF game of Christians vs lions, er, atheists. Maybe have a face-off about which side can tell the funniest joke about the other side. I'm not sure where we'd get impartial judges but we can try to pick equal numbers of judges biased for one side or the other.:p;)

Actually, I'm somewhere between agnostic and deist/pantheist, but regardless we both know there would be very little if any overlap between the two.

I wasn't joking nor was I targeting christians, although the majority of such groups do tend to be Christians.

Oh my gosh! Forty-eight percent were not sure where chocolate milk comes from! Wow!

These same people probably don't even know how to properly spell tomatoe. :tongueout:

So are you among those who believe the liberal elite traffic and torture children in order to drink their adrenochrome rich blood for some satanic rite?

My browser doesn't recognize "tomatoe" as valid, so to help you out:
"Chocolate milk is a sweetened chocolate-flavored milk. It can be made by mixing chocolate syrup with milk. It can be purchased pre-mixed with milk or made at home by blending milk with cocoa powder and a sweetener, melted chocolate, chocolate syrup, or a pre-made powdered chocolate milk mix. -Wikipedia"

You're welcome! ;)
