So far, this particular pope hasn't been great or terrible. Definitely followable.
I'm glad there are stricter criteria for things such as being a cook or a driver.

Yes, most Catholics in the Western world don't follow the teachings of the Church in various areas. Most of them just go through the motions out of family tradition. They hardly ever go to confession, either, but the communion line is packed. I don't know if this is the case outside of the West with Catholics. I know Latin America is increasingly apathetic about it, though.
With regards to virtues and upright conduct both Buddha and Jesus were similar in many ways. The foundation Is the same although outwardly there were differences. These are a very tiny portion of the complementary spiritual teachings of both Buddha and Christ.

Not quite so much now. The current situation is one of huge numbers of adherence to non-Catholic Christian churches (mostly neocharismatics, quite a few originated here in Brazil) while the Catholics tend to become... I guess more conservative overall.
This is where for me I find it very easy to accept Buddha and all the Educators for a better word because they all teach virtues. Buddha taught love and compassion and so did Jesus just using different words.To me they are both teaching the truth just using different methods.

Buddha taught discernment, not obedience nor belief for the sake of belief.
I find deep reflection and meditation help a lot.

It seems contradictory if we assume it's about abortion, but completely consistent if we assume it's about control.
