While Jen is off in search of fresh water I realize we'll need lots of dry wood to get a fire going. It'll be quite cool when darkness sets in. I tear off the bottom of my dress to use as a blanket for the little angel we've adopted. She's so tiny and innocent. Looking down at her makes me think of my own children. God how I wish I was holding them right now. God willing, I'll see them soon and I swear I'll never leave them again.

"I think we'd better get as much dry wood as we can. It'll be dark soon and we'll need to keep warm. Meg, would you like to come with me?" Meg and I seem to be the only two left who are up to the task.

Tonight we'll be alright out here, but if help doesn't come for us soon, we'll need to make preparations for better accomodations than this.

Just then I see a man floating in the water just off shore.....Peter?

He's right, fresh water is needed, especially for those injured. Before I take off I grab the thin metallic thermal blanket from the first aid kit and a bit of rope from the lifeboat. I face the lifeboat, towards the water, and pull out my lighted compass and check which direction I am facing so I know what direction to head to make it back. I turn and head towards the woods grabbing a peice of wood along the way. Once I reach the woods the darkness starts to envelope me so I pull out my Zippo and set the wood aflame to use as a torch. My survival training has really started to come back to me in rushes. I realize that trolling around looking for a creek or stream or whatnot would be futile and time consuming in the dark and people need water now...so I turn my eyes upward for my water source. Being the tropical area we are in I realize that the woods should be quite full of vines. It doesn't take long to find vines hanging around me and I find a good sixe one and grab it. I pull out my knife and cut it diagonally and give it a squeeze. Viola!...water! I hold the edges of the thermal blanket so a pouch is formed and fit the opening around the vine with one hand and squeeze with the other. I can feel the water filling into the blanket. I do the same with a few more vines until I have a substantial amount of water in the blanket and then twist close the edges of the blanket and tie it shut with the rope and sling it across my shoulder. I check my compass, turn myself around in the direction of the lifeboat and start my trek back. After a short walk I start to emerge from the woods onto the sand and my eyes are met with light from what appears to be a bonfire. Two women tending it...I walk towards it.

Oh dear, it is Peter! Please let him be alright. I rush to the water to help him onto shore.

"Peter, are you okay? Are you able to make it to the fire?"

I'm so relieved to see our friend is safe, but what about the others? What's happened to the rest of the passengers? And what about those pirates? Did they accomplish what it was they set out to achieve. I can't imagine what that could have been. To kill and rob us all? Or was it simply an ambush of mass murder? Will they come looking for us? These thoughts are overwhelming and wonder what will become of us. Afterall, this only day one!

i watch with interest the two mildly crazy women trying to build a fire, although i am indeed grateful for their effort, i am rather amused when one tries setting a match to a relatively big log ....... not gonna work, me thinks

they get it going soon enough though, but soon after one of them sees someone they think they know floating in the water, she goes and helps him, and soon after she staggers back with him half collapsed over her

she lays him down next to me, and checks him over, he seems to be fine, relatively speaking - no wounds or pains, just completely exhausted

"i wonder how jen's doing with the water" i say, in a vague effort of conversation

"Just fine" I say as I walk up behind him and set down the bag of water next to him. I look at the man next to him and find myself very confused.

"What's wrong with him? He was fine when I left. Did he go back into the water for something?"

I then turn my attention to the shipsman. He certainly isn't looking any better. As a matter of fact he looks worse, but the warmth of the fire must be bringing him around because I think I saw his eyes flutter. I carefully open the ready made water bag just a bit and pour some water into my hand. I then trail the water across the shipsman's lips and in his mouth. I crouch down next to him.

"Hello, can you hear me? Can you tell me what's wrong?"

He sputters a little, whispers only for now. I think I catch him saying his name is Charlie, but the rest is strange and hard to make out. I give him a little more water and that seems to help some. He opens his eyes more and looks around him and starts to cry a little. "No message, no radios, no ELS. Everything knocked out. Jammed. Pirates jammed." He sputters a bit more and closes his eyes and falls back to sleep.

The dread falls over me. I understand what he meant. From the looks on the faces of a few of my companions I can tell not everyone does though. I take a deep breath and try to explain.

"No radios, no ELS. It appears that what he means is that the pirates are a bit modern day pirates...for he said they jammed. I believe that means they jammed the radio frequencies and the ELS frequencies so that no S.O.S. could be sent. Seems it is quite possible that no one knows yet that anything has even happened. And since we just started on the cruise it's likely that no one will notice until the ship fails to show up in port in a couple weeks. Unless someone realizes a lack of communication with the ship before then. Even then we could be looking at quite a wait before we are found."

I let it sink in, the direness of our situation, into my companions, and wait for the fallout.

"well, look, im sure their will be another cruise ship or something passing by, if this island is inhabited then we can get help, if it isn't, then surely a passing ship will notice the fire?

"hmmmm", i think to my self, retreating to the comfort of my own thoughts, "but what about the pirates, what was the motive? they were determined to wipe us out, what did they want to do that may take a few weeks? i doubt this to be a random encounter, but what on earth was the motive ................."

"ok" i say to the group, returning to the world of speach, "if we accept that we will be here for an indeffinate period of time, we need food and shelter, dolphines live around these waters, so from that i think we can safely deduce fish are a possible source of food ................"

I'm a tad confused PFM! I was in the boat with you guys! Remember me, the on with the dog? :p

I've remained largely silent until the army-type woman explains the gravity of the situation. There's a chance that we could never be found, if there was no contact and the ship was driven off course by the pirates. "We need to establish temporary homes, find water sources, and food sources. Has anyone found water? For food, we could have fish, and there's bound to be ample prey on this island. There aren't usually many predators on islands, besides birds, so prey abounds. Cormac, here, could certainly be trained to hunt. I've seen it done, back home. My dog used to hunt and eat by herself for days at a time, if she got away."

It is only after I say this that I realize everyone else is saying the same things. Knowing that we have to just let everything out, I quiet down and let everyone else talk. I was never one for talk anyway. Instead, I concern myself with the dog, whom I haven't renamed yet. Poor thing. It must be so hungry and thirsty.

No one thinks clearly in these situations. Maybe she saw me, or some other character, and her brain was already overloaded and she forgot you was on the boat.

"Okay, okay! Let's calm down some. We need to get a plan together and have some organization if we are to survive for a while here. Peter is right. We need to do a lot of things. There is always the hope of rescue, and I'm not saying that won't happen, but we have to be prepared for the idea that it may be quite sometime and we may certainly be on our own. I have retrieved some water and we have a fire for tonight. The best thing we can do for now is to get some rest and try to sort things out in the morning. I will be more than happy to show everyone how to retrieve water in the fashion I have until we find an actual ground source if there is one. We have a lifeboat and I have my compass and we can always go on scouting trips in the boat around the area to see what we can find beyond this island. Now, before we get rest I do think we should know who we have here. Not everyone is familiar with each other yet. My name is Jen, I'm 29, and before you all think I'm some strange commando type person let me tell you I am former U.S. Navy and have some training under my belt on surviving and navigation. I hope I can be of great help in getting us through this. Anyone else like to speak up and let us know who you are and how you can help our situation?"

I slowly wake up, with a throbing headache. I see everything has an orangish tint. I also hear voices. I realise that the voices are from people who got to this island from the pirate attack. 'no' I try to say, but its hard to speak. That fire has to be put out before the pirates see and come this way to finish us off. I'm just out of the lights radius, it will take all the strength I can get everyone under the cover of darkness. I slowly stand up, then I walk towards the fire. My clothes are soaked, my jeans and trench coat are heavy, but I still have my athame. "GET THE FIRE OUT!" I yell as I get close to it. People get wierd looks in thier face like I'm crazy. With one big kick, I kick a pile of sand of the fire, and another, and then I kick the fire's fuel. The fire dies, and I explain my actions.People are yelling at me, but I don't care right now. Those pirates are still out thier. This fire would be a beacon for them. I sit down from the weakness in my body. If they come hear, we will all die, either at thier hands or be claimed by the jungle. Yes, the fire could be a beacon for rescue, but there will be more than one scan through this area. The only way we will get through this is if we all stick together. Right now, I suggest we all get some sleep, for tomorow we must prepair to not be rescued. If were rescued, great. But if were not rescued right away, then at least we'll have an early start on shelters and food.
I get up, and walk towards the edge of the beach, and the beginging of the jungle. I take off my coat, and sit down. I then get out my athame and cut from the knees down of my jeans off. That probably wasn't the best thing to do. Oh well, my legs are hairy enough, maybe they won't sunburn that bad. I roll up my coat into a makeshift pillow. But I can't sleep yet. My head couldn't hurt worse if it was shot by a .45, and my back feels like I took a long drop onto concrete. I look up, and see the clearist night sky I have ever seen. I then see a bird. It's that same crow I saw earlier. It flies towards the island and lands on one of the trees. That can only mean things will get worse. The coast guard will be here soon I think. They will be shining thier lights around, see all the bodies lying on this island, and will check them, and we will all be back home, wondering why the hell we decided to go on a cruise.

"hmmm" i think. "it doesn't take much to get this bunch to kick off, although that man had a point,he could have just saved all of our lives ...... DAMN .... why didn't i concider that ................."

i glance over at the new arrival, he is rolling up his trenchcoat, and now trying to get comfortable

"i wonder, looks quite shatterd, reckon he won't want to have anyone checking up on him though ........ oh i can't stand this, ive got stupid cramp in my leg for having been laying down for too long on the hard ground!"

i struggel to lift myself off the ground, and once ive stood up i start to stretch, the wound on my side not aching as much now

i start wondering away from the group, heading along the shore of the island, not venturing too far, but searching through the drift wood for some relatively similar thin chunks of wood

after abotu 5 minutes, the commotion around the dead fire seemes to be dropping, so i head back with the 7 suitable pieces i found

when i get back to the camp, their seems to be a lot of tension, "we can't let things drive us apart like this" i say, "he's right, an open fire was foolish, i should have realised that earlier!" a few of the group still seem distant to my words

"when i was in scouts, we built fires on mini survival training sessions, and we built them in such a way as to hide the light from the open! you need to dig a hole, build the fire in the hole, bug also dig some small trenches going from the bottom of the hole to the open to let the air get down, the idea being it can still get oxygen, it's light is concealed, and you still get the benefits"

a lot of the group don't have a clue what im on about, but at least i notice that jen is nodding her head in agreement

i head over to the little girl i had saved from the boat, she's starting to tremble slightly in the new cold, i carefully pick her up, carry her over to where i had previously been laying, put her down, and then cover her over with my own trenchcoat .... "sleep tight, you didn't deserve any of this, bu ti swear, i'l look after you, for as long as it takes, to me, you will be like my own"

After hearing the arguments die down and seeing a large man kill the fire, I speak up again.

"Well, as you all must know, my name is Peter. I'm sixteen years of age. I have some military experience with the Canadian Air Cadets. I am trained in wilderness survival, though my training was primarily tundra, woodlands and plains based. This dog here, Cormac, as I've explained before, can be trained to hunt for us. I know this because it's done regularily back in my hometown. I suspect that he is a huska, and by the looks of it, Alaskan malamute. However, his head and paws are quite large; I think he may have a bit of wolf in him. For this reason, let me deal with him, unless you have experience with wolf-dogs. I do. My dog back home is one quarter wolf. Does anyone have a whistle on them? That would make training much easier. Luckily, the temperature here is temperate, so the greatest threat to us is nonexistent; while thirst or hunger can kill in days, hypothermia can kill in minutes. Our next problem is water. Where do we get it? We're going to have to look around the island in groups. Don't go anywhere alone. Look specifically in downhill areas, where water would pool. If you find water, do not drink it. Getting diarheah would kill you in a place like this, so we boil it first. Whatever you do, do not smoke. This will dehydrate you. We do heavy work in the late evenings and the mornings, so we aren't effected by the sun. Try hard to not breathe through your mouth. This wastes water. Our third problem is food. Cormac may be able to help eventually, but not yet. Therefore, we need to find food sources. As we find a water source, this will become easier. It is imperative to our health that we find a multitude of different foods, else we will die of malnutrition. Contrary to what has been said, we must not sleep now. In a tropical environment and without water, we need to stay awake until the sun rises almost overhead. We sleep through the hottest period of the day. At least until we find a reliable water source. Remember, our most important tool is us. Let's take stock of all our tools. Remember, nothing is useless."

My tools:

Myself
Clothes: A pair of jeans and a light t-shirt, socks and underwear
A dog's leash and collar
Twenty dollars, in five dollar bills
A key ring with several keys

After I sit for awhile, listening to a few people talk, I decide I should get over thier. I head back towards the group. I get to the group, and speak up.
I would first like to say, I hope I didn't scare anyone when I doused the fire and walked off. I am just getting out of survival mode, so my actions won't be so sudden and harsh. My name is Luke. I have had survival training, not to the extent of military survival, but enough to survive. I am an excelent hunter, and I can make appropriate hunting weapons from what the woods will provide us with. If you need something lifted, yell for me. I can dead-lift over 200 pounds without much problems. I am also skilled with martial arts and free-style wrestling. To survive this, we must all be in a good shape for our bodies to efficiently use food and water. When I am feeling better, I will work with anyone who wants to start an exersice program. Also, if anyone has any alcohol, dump it now. Alcohol dehydrates the body very quickly. Damnit. I had quite a few drinks on the ship. There should be some water-purifying tablet on the boat you came in. If there is, then when there is enough daylight, a few of us need to go find as much water as the tablets can handle. Tomorow, assuming the pirates will be gone, we need to start making our apperance known for rescue squads. I doubt any other passengers survived, or they would have probably found this island by now.
The only two things I am aware of that are in my possesion is a small vile about half full of dragon's blood essential oil, and my athame, an 18 inch mini-katana. As of now, it is, or at least was, very sharp.
Allthough I don't think we should have a ruler of any sort, we do need rules. Rules that will help us survive. I will say that rule number one is NEVER go off alone. If something happens, and your alone, then your SOL.
Another thing, don't eat alot of real juicy fruits like apples. During the American Civil War, the Union army suffered heavy loses due to diarheah caused by diets heavy in apples and corn.

(Backtrack to when the first fire was made) Knowing that everyone is out of immediate danger I start walking up the beach, and I notice all sorts of things beginning to wash up on shore. A golden scarf goes floating by my feet as a wave comes up and licks at me. It looks like golden seaweed flowing by, I scoop it up, it's silk. It's like butter in my hands. Mostly pieces of boat debris, I have to jump to avoid a large chunk of the boat that comes in with the next wave. I decide to stop looking for useful items and to just stand, facing the ocean, I thank God for getting us to dry land so quickly. And I thank the dolphins for all there help, I hear a splash in the distance and realize that the dolphins heard my appreciation. I focus on letting go of the problem, knowing that God will provide us with everything we need, when we need it. Something hits my foot. I CAN'T BELIEVE IT. My medicine bag. And since I was smart enough to put everything in ziplocks, all the contents were dry. My healing stone, I hold it in my hand and feel the warmth of the Mother Mary and of Isis, both spirits have blessed this stone, and God's healing power flows stronger through me with their help. Even my glass pipe does not have so much as a scratch or a nick. Funny, I'm shipwrecked, with half a dress on, I do not know if I am going to live through even one more day, and here I am excited about a rock, a pipe and some herbs. My heart swells and tears off joy burst forth like the floodgates. My heart begins to race, I am so happy, I cannot contain myself. It looks like nothing more that a small leather pouch with a long string, too big to be a necklace, more like a hip pack, but right now it is the most beautiful thing I have ever see. As I throw it across my shoulder, all my hair stand on end, my body tingles with excitement, like a girl going on her first date. My skin tingles, and though I feel my feet touching the sand, I feel as if I'm lifting off the ground. I turn to see that they have the fire going, and people are beginning to move around and gather themselves. As I turn to look at the dense forest of the island, the darkness quickly fades. As I ascend higher, the colors of the forest burst to life, as if a black balloon had blocked my vision, and been suddenly popped.

As my vision adjusts to the bright colors, I realize the pattern. I see clearly which plants are poisonous, and which plants are food. And there is a whole pharmacy and kitchen at my disposal. I quickly run about gathering things I can use. I find berries, and roots, and some wild tomatoes and spinach. There is plaintains, bananas and mangos. Coconuts, the milk will do us all some good. I also collect a few things to make some salves and grab some bark off a tree "chewing it will eleviate pain".

I head back towards the group, they have extinguished the fire, but I can see them clearly. The bright auras of there spirits dancing and swirling with each other. I can see the truth. This was not all just by chance. Everything happens for a reason, these are not strangers, we have all been together before, many times, and this tragic event, is actually a miraculous reunion. Again my excitement is overwhelming I have an uncontrollable urge to hug everyone and remind them that every thing is alright. But as I get closer to them, I can see the heavy looks on their faces, and the darkeness of their auras swell and recede like a throbbing wound. "Look what I found, guys, hey ... .. .." I'm still a few yards away, but they should hear me, then it occured to me that they cannot see me know. They are so heavy with despair, and I am so elevated with joy, that we are in two different 'dimensions', the differences between our states is too great, and they cannot see me. Being invisible is fun and all, but not very effective at a time like this. It's hard to make yourself be depressed on purpose, I have to consious talk myself into a lower feeling, I suddenly thought of my kids, my heart sank like a rock, "when am I going to see my kids agains." In the blink of an eye, the beauty of the forest was again veiled in darkeness. I could no longer see the group, but I could hear them.

Everyone stopped what they were doing, I guess I startled them, but they immediately gave out a big sigh of relief to see it was just me. And then I saw a glimmer of hope in their eyes as they started realizing what was in the huge bundle I carried. I asked the man with the hammer if he would be ever so kind as to crack open a couple of the coconuts so we could all have something to drink. I layed the edibles on a large wood plank that had washed ashore, for everyone to dine on buffet style. I gave a piece of bark to each of the injured and told them to chew on the bark, not eat it, just chew on it until it is nothing but fibers left, and save the thin strands of fiber, lay them out flat and let them dry a bit, I can use them like a bandage. I turn back to the ocean and find a large dish shaped shell, and quickly begin to grind up some roots, and leaves, until it becomes a thick sticky salve. As they dig a pit to get the second fire going, I silently go around and doctor all the wounds, the salve has a antiseptic, and a bonding abilty, and is like paste, then apply the fibers from the bark with has a natural pain killer, and the fibers dry somewhat stiff, protecting the wound with a scab-like bandage.

I pull the bag of water out and tell everyone they are welcome to have some.

"This water is fine. Standing water may be contaminated, but this was not standing water. There are thick vines in these woods here and you can use vines as a source of uncontaminated fresh water. They are full of it. You simply slice the vine a certain way and drain the water. It may not taste like most water you have had, but I assure you it is the cleanest form you can find."

I listened to the others as they talked a bit about themselves and got two impressions... we have some people here who one would be lucky to be stranded with, and the more they talk the more familiar they seem. Like I should somehow know these people or have met them before. Well, as strange as that may sound, I know a lot of people I can't recall a lot. I pull out my pentacle from beneath my shirt and trace the circle over and over with my fingers while lost in thought. Silently praying in my mind for everything to work out alright.
