Absolutely no slack at all.

Trump chooses willful ignorance and thinks he's above the law. For over 30 years, Trump has been dealing with state officials and publicly following and commenting on politics and politicians. During those 3 decades, he's also actively had his eye on the presidency (see here). This isn't some clueless individual, he's clearly had a more than passing or even average interest in the presidency for many, many years. For him to have "no idea" after decades of interacting with politicians and advisors during each iteration is more than a little implausible, it's downright impossible.

Who covets and plans for a job for 30 years yet knows nothing about the job?

Even without the past 30 years of pursuit, no candidate enters the ring uninformed and unadvised. That's what his campaign and transition teams and WH staff are for. He screws up because he's an immature, inept, and willfully ignorant narcissist with the attention span of a squirrel on crack who thinks rules and laws don't apply to him.

Well most politicians are given slack for not understanding anything other than politics- least of all real world economics..

So this is a big improvement!

It can be complicated.
Obama was ignorant of economics, but he needed no slack from his
fans because his every failure was simply pronounced a success.

He ran for President. It's his responsibility to know what the **** he's doing.

So no. No slack. If you don't know how government works, don't try to run it.

If he is proven to have broken the law, then no, he doesn't deserve any slack. Ignorance of the law is no excuse.

On the other hand, if it's just a matter of "protocols," that's a different matter. On paper, the DOJ is under the President, and the FBI is under the DOJ. This means they're both under the President's chain of command. If they really wanted the Justice Department to be independent, then they could have set it up that way.
Common sense dictates that the FBI must be independent from the executive branch when the executive or his administration/campaign are under investigation though. So why should we let Trump off the hook for disregarding common sense and basic professional ethics?
