Usual caveat, I don't like the E word much.
I think a lot of the 'truth' about the supposed conflict between the Northern and Southern schools is lost and or doubtful.
I'm not sure gradual is neccessarily an accurate term really; at least in my impoverished understanding!

As I intimated, the Northern used koans too, and the Southern obviously used zazen. Much of the 'conflict' had as much to do with propaganda, status, power struggles, cultural changes and personalities as with the 'correct' or 'superior' approach to 'enlightenment.' Much of what I read has been washed away by the tides of time, and I've set aside such concerns as I have settled into my, er, 'specialism.'
Regarding your interest, there is of course, much good stuff to be found on the internet.

My son and I are now comparing Lindt 85% Cacao Extra Dark chocolate to Ghiradelli Midnight Reverie 86% Cacao Intense Dark chocolate.
My son prefers the Ghiradelli, I prefer the Lindt. Works out perfectly.

Lindt is my fave, I've not heard of the other. I think the 99% was too much for me, 95 is my top I think.
