Spiritual Health and Purification of the Soul

Seek Perfection in Marriage

- If you are not yet married, do your best to choose the right spouse who will help you increase in faith and peace.

As Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said:

"A woman is married for four things, i.e., her wealth, her family status, her beauty and her religion. You should marry the religious woman (otherwise) you will be a loser." (Al-Bukhari)

The same principle applies for a woman choosing her future husband.

A person who has God at the center of their lives and who have good manners are the best spouses for life's journey because they will help each other stay on the Straight Path, and will make their home a place of peace and tranquility.

- If you are already married, be good to your spouse, and help them increase in faith and in peace. The Prophet, peace be upon him, said:

"The best of you are those who are the best to their wives. (At-Tirmidhi)

By being the best of people in the sight of Allah, God loves this good spouse and increases them in faith and peace.

At the level of the home, husband and wife who are in harmony and in peace together help each other on their path to God.

If you are really searching for inner peace, choose a religious, kind spouse and be good to them, so that you both increase in faith and peace.
If being social, perhaps people must be general, and not specific, and interaction is according.

Don't Be Unjust Towards Others

God loves justice, and He dislikes those who are unjust

Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said that injustice leads to darkness on the Day of Judgment.

There are two main categories of sins:

- Sins between a believer and God

- Sins which involve harm or injustice towards others

God forgives the first type of sins when a believer repents, but for the second category the injustice or harm done to other people must be repaired or forgiven for the repentance to be accepted, which sometimes is not that easy.

So do your best to avoid sins if you are searching for God's Forgiveness which leads to the Abode of Peace, and especially avoid being unjust towards others if you are really searching for inner peace.

Only Speak Good Words

God loves a believer who has good manners and says good words.

When He praised Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, in the Qur'an, He did not praise him for praying a lot, but for having excellent manners.

And the prophet, peace be upon him, said:

"He who believes in Allah and the Last Day should say good words or keep quiet."

Being kind to others is a sign of mercy in the heart, which is what God wants to see in believers, and a reflection of this kindness and mercy is to utter only good words, keeping away from obscene language which decreases his faith and record of good deeds.

By doing so, a believer comes closer to God, and increases in faith and in peace.

If you are really searching for inner peace, keep away from foul language and only speak good words.

Be Patient When You Have a Hard Day

Some days are easy, other days are normal, and others are difficult

This pattern happens to all human beings. One day we have good health, the next day we didn't sleep well and we have a strong headache, and on another day we can't go out of home and take sick leave.

Change of conditions is part of the life of all people. Nothing stays the same. Even our thoughts, our understanding and way of thinking evolves with time as we gain more knowledge and wisdom.

Is there a way out when we go through a difficult day, a difficult week?

The only remedy is to do our best, ask God for help, and then be patient. It is He who decides our destiny, even though we think we are the decision-makers. God loves those who are patient and raises them in ranks as their faith gets stronger when they rely on Him alone.

A feeling of peace fills the heart when eventually the problem is solved and the hardship has passed, as we thank God for His endless blessings and bounties.

If you are really searching for inner peace, be patient. Each problem has a solution In-Shaa-Allah.
Do your best and maintain your prayers, and always trust in Him.

Remember the Purpose of Life

What is life's purpose?

Are we here to live 70 or 90 years, and that's it?

Or is this life really a transition phase we are going through, like the nine months transition phase we went through before birth?

A Muslim believe that ever since the start of those initial nine months, we are on a long path to God.

The purpose of life is to get to know our Creator, and to be prepared to meeting Him at the end of the path in the Hereafter. We are here to know Him, follow His Guidance and worship Him with love.

After this life ends, our soul returns to Him, and those whom He admits to an eternal life in Heaven will live an eternal life of peace, and will see Him.

So the reality of this life is that it's a test.
We are going through a test which ends the day we leave this world, and if we pass the test we would be saved.

This reminder is important when we face some difficulties in life or hardships. And after hardship comes ease, so don't worry too much. Be patient, be content with what you have and look forward to meeting Allah in the Hereafter.

If you are really searching for peace, don't forget life's real purpose.

Remember This World is Temporary

What is more important: a temporary world or an eternal Hereafter?

What is temporary by definition means it has a limited span of time, whereas what is eternal has no end.

When taking decisions in this life remember that what is eternal is more important, so give preference to God's Guidance if you want to please Him, and live a life of peace here and in the Hereafter.

Remember the Abode of Peace in the Hereafter, and do your best to deserve God's Mercy, and live a life of peace in this life.

If you are really searching for peace, don't be deluded by this temporary life.

Remember God in Times of Ease

Most believers turn to God in times of hardship, but often "forget" in times of ease.

Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said:

“Remember Allah during times of ease and He will remember you during times of difficulty.”
(Tirmidhi)

If you really love God, you will remember Him in all situations and at all times, as the remembrance of Allah is the path to inner peace and tranquility.

If you are really searching for peace, don't only remember God during hardships, but thank Him during the times of ease, and remember Him so He remembers you.

Be a Free Person

Freedom is a great blessing for a happy life.

In the modern world of today, we have many chains that take away parts of our freedom.

When one is in debt, part of their freedom is lost, together with the loss of the peace of mind for those who worry how they will repay their debts.

When a person is addicted to alcohol,
they are surely not free as they are dependent on drinking what makes them lose consciousness. How can they be free?

When a person is addicted to gambling, they often end up losing their wealth, and in some cases their family and home. Why do that?

There are many other forms of addiction and modern slavery, and to be free one needs to get rid of them all.

Islam is all about freedom, and God's Guidance is for human beings to get rid of all types of slavery and addiction in order to live a free life where peace prevails.

If you are really searching for peace, be a free person,
and live an independent life following the Guidance of your Cr
eator.

Don't Let Your Heart Be Attached to Worldly Pleasures

A heart which is filled with peace can't be attached to worldly pleasures.

You know why?

Because these worldly pleasure come and go, increase and decrease.

Money comes and goes, so does other forms of wealth, and also health and strength...

If the heart is attached to a "variable" factor which goes up and down, its level of happiness will increase when it goes up (but at the same time worry to lose it), and decrease when it goes down.

What is needed in order to achieve peace is for the heart being attached with the real source of peace which never changes, and that real source of peace is our Creator.

So don't fill your heart with the love of worldly pleasures, as that's the wrong path to take if you are really searching for inner peace.

Let your heart be attached only to God.

Depend on God Not on His Gifts

God often gives us gifts, like money, a good spouse, a good job, good health, ... etc., but sometimes we get distracted by forgetting Him and focusing on the gift instead.

Doing that will separate a believer from his Creator, as the heart fills with attachment to something other than God.

For example, a believer earns a large sum of money, and is happy of his bank account. Instead of thanking God for this gift, he is now attached to his bank account, and thinks this will be the source of his sustenance, while he forgets that God is The Provider, not his bank account.

The peace of mind which comes with a strong faith, now turns into worry about his balance and anxiety about the future.

Don't be that person.

When God gives you a gift, thank Him for this gift and make use of it in the right way, but don't make it take over your heart.

To maintain the heart filled with God's love, a believer does not allow the attachment to worldly matters into the heart, but instead manages these worldly matters in a wise and balanced way as he knows that worldly matters never last, as one day either they are gone, or we are gone and we leave them behind.. What really counts is God's Love.

If you are really searching for inner peace, don't be distracted by worldly matters and don't let them take over your heart.

Do Good Deeds That Bring You Closer to God: Visit Those Who Are Sick

In the Qur'an, God relates those who believe and have faith with doing good deeds, like for example:

"It is that of which Allah gives good tidings to His servants who believe and do righteous deeds. Say, [O Muhammad], "I do not ask you for this message any payment [but] only good will through kinship." And whoever commits a good deed - We will increase for him good therein. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Appreciative."
(42:23)

Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said that faith increases and decreases. It increases with good deeds, and decreases with sins.

So one of the ways of increasing in faith and inner peace is increasing good deeds, and among the good deeds we are encouraged to perform is to visit those who are sick. This act is highly rewarded by Allah, to the point that a thousand angels pray blessings on him the whole day or the whole night
following the visit.

Why is this "small" act highly rewarded by God?

Because it is a sign of mercy in the heart. Allah is the Most-Merciful, and He loves that we show mercy to others, as this helps cheer them up.

When a person is sick and can't leave home, they often feel lonely and depressed. They feel in pain and often suffer from anxiety. Will God cure them? Or will the illness continue?

When receiving a visitor, the patient feels that there are others out there caring for him, and feels the mercy and kindness of the community. Loneliness and anxiety disappear during the visit, and the patient receives news and updates on what is going on outside, and people pray for them.

If you want a thousand angel to pray for you, and feel that amazing sensation of peace, and if you really want to increase in inner peace, visit those who are sick, cheer them up, and pray for them.

Do Good Deeds That Bring You Closer to God: Be Kind to Orphans

One of the ways a believer can come closer to God and increase in faith, spirituality and peace is taking care of orphans, or at least being kind to them.

Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said:

"The best Muslim house is a house in which an orphan is well treated; and the worst Muslim house is a house in which an orphan is badly treated."
(Ibn Majah)

So why is taking care of orphans so important in the sight of God?

And why does God and His messenger encourage us to give orphans such a top priority?

The answer is again related to the importance of kindness and mercy in Islam

God is the All-Merciful, and He wants us to live in families and societies where kindness and mercy prevail.

An orphan is a lonely child who has lost the care and protection of a father, and if without means is vulnerable to being harmed, or going hungry. God wants us to care for them and protect them from hunger and harm, and to give them the attention, dignity and love they deserve as human beings whom He created.

Do you want to have a soft heart?

Look at this advice from the Prophet:

A man once came to Prophet Muhammad complaining about being hard hearted, so Prophet Muhammad advised him:

“
Tap on the heads of orphans, and feed the needy one.” (Musnad Ahmad)

If you are really searching for God's Love and you want to find inner peace, take care of orphans and treat them well.

Do Good Deeds That Bring You Closer to God: Be Extra Kind to Your Parents

One of the important prerequisites for God's Love is being kind and dutiful to parents.

A believer who does all types of good deeds but does not treat parents well will not be accepted by God, and will therefore always remain at a distance from Him,
till forgiven by his mother and father.

Why is this so?

The answer again in this third example of good deeds is related to the importance of kindness, compassion and mercy in Islam. Parents who spent many years caring for their children when they were young, giving them all the love and attention they needed, and often making great sacrifices for their kids, have fulfilled their responsibilities.

When the children grow and become independent, parents also gradually become elderly and in need of care and support, not only material but also emotional.

Now they have rights, even if they weren't the best of parents. Compassion, kindness, respect, love and care is what God commands us to do, using the word birr in the Qur'an which gives all these meanings in addition to patience.

And if one or both of them have passed away, the duty of praying for them and asking about their close friends and relatives continues, being kind to them also.

There was a man from Yemen who was very dutiful to his mother to the extent that Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, told his companions that if they saw this person they should ask him to pray for them, as his prayers are accepted. His name was Uwais Al-Qarni, who reached this very high level of faith and closeness to Allah not through praying all night, but by being extra-kind to his mother.

If you are really searching for peace and closeness to God, be extra-kind to your parents.

Do Good Deeds That Bring You Closer to God: Take Extra Care of Your Neighbors

One of the ways of increasing good deeds that please God is to take extra care of neighbors.

Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said:

"
Gabriel continued to advise me to treat neighbors well until I thought he would make them my heirs." (Muslim)

Why are neighbors so important in Islam?

Because God wants to see us live in caring societies
, where people help each other, and the people who are closest to us are our neighbors to whom we should always be kind and courteous

A caring society is one where peace and good relations prevail among its members, and one where people are friendly and help each other out in times of need and in hardships.

If you want to increase in faith, peace and good deeds, take good care of your neighbors, give them presents, always be courteous towards them, and help them out when they need help.

Remember That We Will All Depart From This World

In this week's Friday sermon, the Imam focused his speech on the importance of remembering death as a means to "wake up" from our strong attraction to this worldly life.

No human being lives for ever,
60, 70 or 90 years and we all leave this world. And all what we have here, like money or cars, we leave behind. We don't take them with us to the Hereafter.

One of the righteous people had a piece of paper he wrote which he would ready after each prayer. The note said:

Do good deeds as your end is near

This is very true, as each day that goes past brings us one day closer to the day we will leave this world.

With this daily reminder, a believer wakes up from loving this world, and does more good deeds that bring him closer to God, which increases him in contentment and peace.

If you are really searching for inner peace, remember that we will all leave this world one day, so be ready to meet God

Be Consistent in Your Remembrance of God

Remembering God is the main key to inner peace.

In addition to the five daily prayers, other optional deeds to remember God, like reading the Qur'an and the other forms of remembrance (dhikr), help believers maintain a strong relation with our Creator.

Some days we have more time to read the Qur'an and make dhikr than other days when we are more busy. But even when we are busy we should not forget God's remembrance, and maintain a basic minimum each day.

It is recommended to complete the reading of the Qur'an in one month, which means reading one of the 30 parts of the Qur'an each day. If you can do that, then do your best to maintain reading 1 part a day, even if you are busy.

God love consistent good deeds even if they are few, so whatever you do maintain the basic minimum each day if you are really searching for peace.

Accept Destiny After Doing Your Best: It's One of the Articles of Faith

One of the righteous people used to say that he found contentment in the acts of destiny which God prescribed for him.

Belief in Qadar, often translated as "measured destiny", is one of the six articles of faith in Islam. The stronger the faith of a believer, the stronger their belief in Qadar and their acceptance of what God has prescribed for them.

This does not mean that a believer should not take positive action to improve his conditions, but means that after having done one's best, we accept whatever God has decreed for us with trust and contentment, as we know that God wants for us what is best.

When we expect a positive event to happen and it does not take place, sometimes we may feel disappointed or let down. Initially we simply don't understand the wisdom behind such an outcome, but many months later, or even many years years later, we appreciate that what happened in the past which we thought was a negative event in reality was very positive as it turned out to be in our best interest on the long run.

Be patient when this happens, as patience is half the faith (the other half is being thankful - patient in hardships and thankful is times of ease).

If you are really searching for peace, accept what God has prescribed for you after having done your best.

Be Pleased With What Allah Has Decreed For You

Being content with one's fate is a great source of inner peace.

A person who is not content is a person who lacks inner peace.

When it comes to matters of fate or destiny, be sure that you can never change what happened in the past. Clocks don't go backwards, they only go forward, so why be sad for something which is impossible for you to change?

Real happiness comes from inner peace that results from pursuing a moral life, and from serving others. Money comes and goes, good health comes and goes, but what remains at the end is the legacy of good deeds a believer leaves behind. So what a believer needs to find peace is not be sad about the money he does not have, but to be content with God's many blessings and to live a life of virtue and care for others.

If you are really searching for peace, be content with what you have, and be pleased with what God has decreed.
