Star Trek - May 8, 2009

I am so ready for this movie. To lead up to it I've been doing a movie marathon, 1 Star Trek movie a day since last Tuesday. That makes Friday the 11th day of the marathon.

If you want a little bit of the story, track down Star Trek: Countdown. It's a prologue comic they've done to lead into the story of the movie. It's amazing!

Ebert gives it a bad review. I didn't read it because he is usually a spoiler, but the headline gives me the impression that the movie is all FX and not story. That's a bummer. My two favorite Trek movies (Khan and Undiscovered Country) have great stories to support the action. I know it's getting good reviews overall, but this one worries me.

I gave up listening to the critics a long time ago. Doubly so when a new movie comes out that's related to a timeless franchise, and for two reasons:

1. I have my own sense of taste that is quite different from most of these "critics", so in my eyes they're almost always wrong.

2. Oftentimes these critics are stuck in the past and never take the changes in film technology and techniques into account when comparing new movies to older ones.

For example, Star Trek (the movie) certainly would be a "FX fest" since modern computer technology and film techniques allow them to make amazing and quite realistic effects and scenes. Star Trek (the series) was a low-budget sci-fi TV show in the 60s that didn't have much money to work with, therefore the effects are quite simple (and in some cases, even missing.)

Regardless of the special effects in use, I expect an intelligent and consistent story to view, otherwise, what's the point? I might as well watch Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions on repeat if I just want gratuitous use of special effects and lots of explosions, gunfights and swordfights without having to put my brain in gear.

Please don't remind me of that fact....I can't go to the 7 pm showings thanks to my exam schedule and a club meeting. I have to live with the fact that I have to wait til 1045 tomorrow morning to see it while a friend who's never seen a episode or movie of Star Trek is going at 7 tonight just to see Quinto.

Best movie so far this year (and I expect I'll like it better than other summer blockbusters like Transformers 2 or Terminator 4). It was great! I can't wait to go see it again.

Trek has been surpassed by BattleStar. The BEST SciFi series EVER.

"Regardless of the special effects in use, I expect an intelligent and consistent story to view, otherwise, what's the point?"

Exactly what BattleStar has. Racism, genocide, immortality, sin, patriotism, taken on and dealt with in a mature way with a case being made for BOTH sides of those issues. Moore took what he had done with TGN and the plot idea of the old 70's BattleStar and did something really UNIQUE. A serious character based morality tale that is ambiguous - even about genocide.

Best frackin' series ever.

I'm sure that it's great. Once I can afford to, I plan to watch DVDs of the whole series from the beginning.

In fact, it probably deserves a thread of its own so that we can get back to talking about this amazing movie.

Without spoiling anything, I can say that I walked into the movie with the mistaken impression that it couldn't throw any surprises my way. Instead, the shocks began just a few minutes into the movie (though I was spoiled for the first one), and continued up until the final scene. I laughed, I applauded geekily at familiar lines, and I teared up more than once.

I went to watch "Star Trek" last night. I haven't watched any of the shows or the previous movies (what sort of SF geek am I?), so I went in with little knowledge about the overall Trek-verse.

Saying that, I was quite impressed with the movie. The acting was decent enough, there was quite a lot of action scenes, but these scenes did not seem gratuitous and inserted merely to please a presumed adolescent male audience. The special effects were astounding. Although shallow movies with good special effects do annoy me, (I keep on thinking how much better the movie might have been if part of the special effects budget was spent on writing staff) I really appreciate good special effects when the rest of the movie is decent. Such as what has occured for this movie.

The plot of the movie was decent enough - villians from the future are hunting Spock from the future, and young Spock and Kirk are caught in the crossfire. There is the occasional plot hole, and the evil villian, Nero, and his crew, comes across as far too simplistically-drawn for my liking. It's definitely not the most celebral of movies, but having said that, it's still quite fun to watch.

Now, let's discuss problems with this movie. Although the science is fairly decent (quite love the opening scene where a cadet flies out into open space, and their shouts suddenly become silenced by the vacuum), but there is the occasional problem, too (and I am not daring to go into the Trek-tech in this movie). There is also a particular scene later in the movie which introduces Kirk to the original Spock that felt far too coincidental for my liking. Another complaint that I have is...

...that the movie disregards the canon of the original movie and television series. This is discussed by future-Spock (played by Nimoy himself) who discusses what happens in the original Trekverse, and it is somewhat different to the prequel. Although most franchise reboots try to have their cake and eat it too, by disregarding the original franchise but getting in the original fans to view said franchise, I don't know how Trek fans will treat this. Not having any sort of affiliation with the franchise, it's hard to have an opinion.

But overall, I quite enjoyed myself - some minor inconsistency problems, but it's quite a decent SF blockbuster movie. Decent acting, great action, great special effects. Recommended.
