Enterprise did it for me.

It pulled everything together. Must have been tricky writing for a series with so many details set in place, and you need to write the plot into them.

Love that science officer!

Oh I know! Season 1 was decent, season 2 was ok at best, 3 was great, and 4 was awesome!! Once they brought in the writers who knew what they were doing made Enterprise a great Trek series. But alas...the new Paramount and UPN executives were pretty much doing anything they could to kill Star Trek. Have you seen the notes for Season 5? They were going to make season 4 look like a playground act with the buildup to the Romulan War.

I loved DS9. I loved the political intringue, and the whole arc of the Dominion War was freaking awesomely done.
I love DS 9 too for the same reasons, have it on DVD.
Garak is my favorite character.
I think it's a shame that Star Trek rarely shows political conflicts and the problems of scientific exploration but too much action - at least the movies.
They also never show how hard it is to find a common ground for communication with other species.
We humans can not even communicate from culture to culture without difficulties, how hard it must be to actually talk with members of an alien species?

I've never really been into Star Trek to be honest. One of my friends is obsessed with it though. Not to the point of dressing in a Star Trek uniform and going to conventions, though I suspect that's more an American thing.

I once made the mistake of trying to join in a conversation he was having about Star Trek. He mentioned a character called Hoshi and I said "Oh I know the one you mean, she's quite cute." Cue half an hour of him finding every vaguely risque video and picture of Hoshi ever made to show to me.

I don't like Star Trek. Their vision of the future is just not realistic or gritty enough.

BSG rules!

I agree with you there, their starships are too sterile...like living in a hospital. Plus they're really very snobby in that future. They're like, "Oh, we're all enlightened and evolved and don't go to the bathroom anymore. Humans in the past were primative and superstitious and now we're better and superior." Ever notice that the Federation doesn't get along with any of the non-humanoid life forms in Star Trek? There are like 4 non-humanoid species, and they either go to war, or have a cold relationship with all of them. Plus, look at how they treat what they consider to be "backward" cultures. They're downright prejudiced against the Ferengi. Am I right Star Trek people?

Lol, your friend should know that the hot Vulcan chick was cuter. Seven of Nine is probably one of my favorite Star Trek characters on the "Rowrrr" scale. Though Uhura was not without her charms on the original series. ;)

It is tough to chose between TOS and TNG...both had their own strengths, weaknesses, and charms.
I can see where it would be tough for you. TOS had the Gorn (one of your own), which would lead you to pick it.
OTH, the fight scenes between the superior Gorn Captain & Kirk were too bad to even be laughable.

I wonder why anyone would like ds9, it was boring as hell. The rest, including enterprise, were fantastic.

I like DS9, I even bought the series on DVD.
Garak is my most loved character in all Star Trek Series, together with Spock & Data.

Star Trek was not meant to be realistic, it was meant to offer an example of a socialistic Utopian society. As such, much of what you see are stereotypes and caricatures. Klingons were symbols of brute force, Ferengi were symbols of capitalism, etc, etc.

BSG Rules indeed!

If you look closely, The Federation in Star Trek appears to be more of a distopia.

I never liked that they don't get along with any non-humanoid species. The seek out new life and new civilizations, but only as long as that life isn't too weird or the civilizations don't hold different "unenlightened" philosophies. They look down their noses at Earth's past humans as primative, violent, and barbaric while sitting in the paradise that so many toiled for millenia to acheive.

Then again, I probably am overanalyzing...it is a TV show after all.

Star Trek is meant to be over-analyzed, it's the funnest part of the show. But why do you think that the Federation is a dystopia? They are always shown as progressive and successful. Sure they look down their noses at the past and aliens who don't share their socialistic utopian dream but that doesn't make them dystopic, just arrogant and snotty, you know, human. :D

Here is a funny video from cracked.com that covers some of the points (not all though): Why The Star Trek Universe is Secretly Horrifying | Cracked.com

To summarize the points in the humorous video I linked to. they argued that humanity in Star Trek is a wealthy but culturally stagnant and homogeneous society in which innovation and novelty are the only valued commodities. They also suggest that the military is corrupt and has an unrealistic standard when it comes to interspecies interaction. (in other words, the prime directive isn't practical and people uphold it despite knowing that it isn't)

Ok, now you do recognize that the source is Cracked.com right? And that they are making fun right? While their suggestions on what goes on behind the scenes in Star Trek society are humorous they certainly are not what was intended by the creators and writers.

Battlestar Galactica, at least the one mentioned earlier, is the recent remake and is a spectacular piece of science fiction, (the 70s version was tripe IMHO). It isn't dsytopic either, its post-apocalyptic and more realistic than Star Trek, also IMHO. The entire series is on Hulu plus.
