Steve Bannon Suggests There Are Too Many Asian CEOs In Silicon Valley

The issue is Americans are not earning the positions. Businesses are not obligated to hire an American, jobs are in competition so US needs to learn the skills or get passed up by somebody who has them, regardless if they are a minority. I personally am not too much a fan of affirmative action but I feel it has its place. If an area has 50% minorities there is no reason a company should be 0% minority.

Affirmative action decides which minorities are good and which are bad, based on some vague and arbitrary definition of oppression.

Silicon Valley apparently doesn't need affirmative action.

Silicon valley actually works more so on economics than affirmative action. Indians are cheaper to hire, which is why the U.S. gets them, displacing many Americans themselves. That's different from affirmative action, which works on race based policies.

Are you arguing that Silicon valley should have affirmative action for home grown Americans?

No we Americans need to worry about our effectiveness in a global market and I think a huge issue is our education which I mentioned earlier in this thread. It is no surprise to me that US is being outpaced by majority of countries, not just Asians.

Americans and Westerners will never be able to truly compete with Asians in the fields they dominate for many reasons, mostly culture and economics. Asians are cheaper and their culture is heavily work centered. It's not unusual for many Asians to work long hours/week, something that only a few percent of Americans do.

Americans can dominate in research, service industry and other fields where higher level critical and creative thinking is required and not promoted in Asian culture.

Like I said it isn't just Asians. It shouldn't be difficult for US to be at least the top ten in math and science, thirtieth is just sad.

As someone that used to manage in a large high tech company, I can tell you that interns are the cheapest to hire. We market to interns throughout the year.

Green card and US citizens are paid the same. For every visa that stays and gains residency, their salary catches up.

Even high tech has remote sites to offset cost in India, Taiwan, Europe and Eastern Europe...

How do you decide which minorities are treated unfairly, that's my point. According to affirmative action, a Syrian male refugee is more privileged than a rich latino. You're stating that some minorities are treated unfairly, while ignoring that to elevate these minorities other minorities should be punished.

You've provided data that shows minorities being treated unfairly. Couldn't we use that to help form policy?

If that Syrian male refugee is having a hard time finding work, why shouldn't we be able to help him over the rich Latino?

Since you cannot create a perfect system, you abolish the one now

And ignore some of the help it has given some groups? I'd rather tweak it to include the ones falling through the cracks.

The way affirmative action is set up is race based, please pay attention. Syrian Americans are a minority which are perceived to be successful, while latinos are perceived to be not. The perception is wrong, and if any affirmative action should be employed it should be based on economic need and background vs race.

Helping some groups while harming others. No thanks.

Then what's the point of hiring East and South Asians? Might as well cancel the J and H and just hire Americans (or Canadians/Mexicans with the TN).

When interviewing people for tech positions we, the company I work with, tend to go by qualifications and education and things like that. Race and ethnicity are really the last things on our minds.

The point of hiring Indians and south Asians is that they are as skilled as whites. Go figure?

After years of visas, there is a large permanent base of Indians and south Asians residing in silicon valley. I just happen to be one.

I don't know...seems as if we have common ground. I agree there is an economic basis that should be considered above race, actually. If there is a way to tweak affirmative action in that direction, it should help a group suffering disproportionately by an unfair economy.
