STOP PA's "Marriage Protection Amendment.

As A rule I don't often get involved in political issues, but a gay/transgender friend of mine asked me to sign an online petition to stop the so-called "Marriage Protection Amendment" . Even though I do not live in Pennsylvania, I decided to do what ever I can to help.

If you would like to sign the petiton online, please go to www.libertypa.org. It truly will not take you long to do so.

Thank you for the oppertunity to post this request here.

I signed. But I doubt they will care much about a non-Pennsylvanian's opinion.

I'm involved in the same fight in Virginia.

Ok, I signed it! Love God, love everyone else. What's so hard about that? This is hate. Nothing more, nothing less.

Dear Representative:
Petition said:
On Tuesday, January 24, 2006, right-wing legislators and the radical Pennsylvania Family Institute are going to try to hurt our families by introducing the "Marriage Protection Amendment." This divisive amendment would ban civil unions and threaten domestic partnership benefits, hospital visitation rights and much more for all unmarried families.

Pennsylvania already has a law that denies marriage to same-sex couples. This amendment is unnecessary and I urge you NOT to co-sponsor or support it.

Respectfully,
Must these petitions include language(in bold) that is clearly intended to be inflammatory? While I agree with the petition, I just do not 'like' this kind of tactic.

As Maize pointed out, they may not care much about a Georgian's opinion either.....well I did vote against GA's amendment even though I knew it was going to pass, so what's one more symbolic act?:D

I'll give it some thought, but does anyone else wish they would leave out the 'name-calling' or it that just me?

As a Pennsylvania resident- I will personally call every representative and other figure I can when I return to PA this week.

Does anyone else know what else I should do? Maize, you have lots of experience in this (unfortunately :( ), any suggestions?

Well I wouldn't say I have lots of experience, but my advice to anyone who wants to help stop anti-gay amendments in our states, is to join an statewide organization that is a non-partisan lobbying network for those concerned about this issue; Give money, volunteer, write emails and letters, lobby your representatives. If there is no such organization in your state, the Human Rights Campaign is a way to go too. We need loud voices together.

[font=Arial, Helvetica][font=Arial, Helvetica]On a side note: On January 13th, by a vote of 73 to 22, the Virginia House of Delegates passed an anti-gay constitutional amendment to limit marriage to opposite-sex couples and to prohibit civil unions, domestic partnerships, and other legal arrangements between same-sex couples. Next it goes to the Senate.

I see your point, but "ring-wing" and "radical" are hardly inflammatory, especially when it's the truth. But, you know, I could be biased. ;)

I tried to sign it, but as I have an English post code, I wasn't allowed to do so.

I sign as many petitions as I can as it is, but, being in England, I wonder whether my help does any good. Of course I back and support the British organizations - but it strikes me that you Americans need help much more than British GLBT's.

Well, I don't think the language was very offensive at all. Right-Wing is term that is usually used to refer to people who are extremely right leaning. Very conservative. Nothing much wrong there. Same with Radical. There are many people who are pro-family. But many of these organizations, such as Focus on the family, actually are radical groups.

May not like the terms, but they are actually rather accurate.

I for one, get kind of annoyed when people get so bent out of shape over that. I have spent my life listening to more derogatory terms referring to myself and other gay people, and that's supposed to be ok. I can listen to groups such as www.godhatesfags.com spread their anti-homosexual message in such a manner as to make you wanna just grab them and shake them.

But God forbid we people use terms such as right-wing or radical.

If you think about the type of terms that are used to describe homosexuals, these terms are nothing.

Conservatives have no problem with using the term "left- wing" or "far -left". When they use the word "liberal", conservative mothers cover the ears of their young.:biglaugh:

Thank you all who signed or replied! After I first posted this thread, I was afraid that few would take it seriously. I don't know if just signing a pitition online will help a lot, but it can't hurt the cause of social justice. At least people will know that the admendment really will not protect marriage for everyone in PA.

I just wanted to say that I don't look at fighting against discrimination and for equal rights as a political issue, it's a civil rights issue and anyone can be involved if they wish to be. ;)

That's right maize. That's also why Focus on Family felt it was important to set up shop in canada, to help us make the correct civil rights decisions, too.
