Strange question about Disney

Hi there. I have a probably strange question but was wondering. Im a huge fan of Disney stuff. I collect Disney comics and movies and love trawling the net for anything Disney I can get my hands on. My Disney hobby is a big part of my life. If i joined the LDS church would I be expected to give this up? How does the church feel about hobbies such as this?

Welcome to RF. Jeez. Another Disney freak (no offense). My oldest son lives for Disney, works at Disneyland and practically lives there. More to the point, I have some Mormon cousins who, like you, love everything Disney. Enjoy it.

I think you may have been talking to a fundamentalist Christian rather than to a Latter-day Saint. At any rate, I'm a Disney fan, too. I especially like some of the older animated features like Bambi, Lady and the Tramp, The Fox and the Hound, Sleeping Beauty, and Fantasia.

Most of the people I know wouldn't have a problem with anything Disney....After all those were the first movies that you could take your children to.

It's good for everyone to have a hobby or some thing to enjoy.

I'm a Nascar freak my self......Especially Jeff Gordon, My daughter got me a full size (fathead, are you familiar with those?) for my birthday last year, it is hanging in my bedroom.....they are like wallpaper just stick on the wall and you can move them around.... I guess since I am not married a little lust isn't bad, (ha ha)

Actually, I wasn't. But a do know of several of the more conservative groups of Christians who have a problem with such things. I could be wrong, but I believe there are some Southern Baptists would rather die than let their kids watch a movie that had a witch, a dragon or a fairy godmother in it. And come to think of it, FFH might have a problem with those things, too.

We're fine with video games and fantasy. We are opposed to violence, and I'm not familiar enough with Dungeons and Dragons to know how violent it is. But we see Harry Potter, the Lord of the Rings and stuff like that as harmless.

I guess you could loosely describe Dungeons and dragons as the Lord of The Rings in boardgame form.

Out of curiosity, how do you feel about them?

Speaking from my experience, some of the people in my church are the biggest Harry Potter fans I know. Lord of the Rings is also on the favourite films list of a lot of the people I know from church as well.

I don't actually personally know any LDS who have decided to prevent their children being exposed to fantasy stuff. Where I am, someone who did do that would be considered to be a little weird, but I don't think they would be confronted about it.

The general consensus as I see it is that provided you only explore fantasy for entertainment purposes it is ok, and generally that is all those kind of things are made for anyway. You can even be quite an obsessive fan, but provided that you only view it as entertainment (and don't let it interfere with your normal course of life). When you start trying to seriously explore magic and suchlike is when it is deemed to become dangerous.
