Do you have any evidence that the COVID vaccine is actually effective at preventing infection? I work in healthcare analytics and I have actually seen strong evidence to the contrary. I remember in January 2022, my county had the highest number of new COVID cases per day of any month since the start of the pandemic (extremely high incidence: 300+ cases per day in a county of just over 100,000 people). Yet, approximately 70% of everyone in the county (myself included) were vaccinated at that point. If the vaccine were actually effective at preventing infection, this wouldn't be occurring. I myself have had COVID after being vaccinated (and it was a pretty severe case, probably the sickest I've been in 5+ years), and the majority of people I know who have been vaccinated have gotten COVID after their vaccination. I have heard the argument that vaccination prevents the most severe cases that result in hospitalizations and deaths, but considering that around 30% of the world is still unvaccinated, it's not possible that the vaccine is solely responsible for the huge reduction in hospitalizations and deaths. If this were the case, we would still be seeing deaths from COVID at around 30% of what they were in 2020-2021, but in actuality the deaths per day from COVID worldwide are well under 5% of what they were early on: https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/ . The only explanation for this is that the virus has just become much weaker. Masking and distancing were key in preventing even more tragic outcomes early on but I'm not convinced the vaccine has ever been useful even though I am vaccinated.

Vaccines do not prevent infection but usually lessen the effects. They also can lessen the rate of transmission since symptoms are not as severe, especially with a virus that's transmitted through the air.

Vaccines (when they work properly) definitely DO prevent infection. That's why we don't have smallpox and polio around anymore.
Also, I would think that the transmission rate would be lower for more severe viruses and higher for less severe ones, since the sicker someone is, the less likely they are to be active and out around people that they could expose it to.

And how long were those variants the most common? Is it protective against the current variants? I don't deny that the vaccine may have some effectiveness against some strains, but I think the rate at which the virus mutates makes it difficult to keep up with.
