We do have our nicks, but what are we afraid of? Why not our real first names? Or is there any technical hitch? My Name is Amar Nath. My friends call me as Amar. My grandpa named me after the snow shrine in Kashmir. All males in our family have that kind of names till my generation.

David, but commonly I get called Dave. This happened long before I decided I was Dave. I suspect the nature of my personality encourages people to use a more informal name.

My grandpa named me after the snow shrine in Kashmir.
One third of all offerings at the Amarnath shrine go to the family of a Muslim shepherd who first found it. Tradition. Last year, the shrine was visited by 220,000 devotees. In 2011 it received about 634,000 persons. It depends on climatic and political conditions in that particular year.
Hindu DIR, Aup? Or did you want it in general discussion?
My preference is for Hindu DIR, Vinayaka, because the question is addressed to our regular members so that we know each other better. However, no problem if it is included in our Virtual Ashram.

I chose Amitabh for my son (because of my reverence to Lord Buddha) and Anupama (Beyond compare) for my daughter. These days, the first girl is many a times named as Anupama or Ananya (who has no second), very common. The last name I chose for my daughter-in-law. :)

My daughter has a Hindu name as her birth certificate name. But for the sake of her privacy, I am not going to reveal that but it starts with the letter "A" and means "Protected (by Gods)".

My wife's Hindu name starts with the letter "A" and means "Offering (to Gods)".

I got your wife's name - Arpita. Will try to get your daughter's name, I will not reveal it for the reasons you mention here but send you a PM.

There is another story in names among Hindus. What is your 'patri' name - according to the arrangements of planets / zodiac / nakshatras at the time when one is born (graha / rashi / nakshatra - don't know how they arrive at it but it starts with a composite of a consonant and a vovel, for example - Mu. Then the name could be Mukesh or Mukul or something like it). These names are given by the astrologer when one goes to get a birth chart of a child. This, many a times, is considered to be a secret name, sort of a natural/God-given name. These names are quaint, because the person who gives them may have been born in a different age, in the beginning of 20th Century and not knowing that the world has changed quite a lot since that time. But that is immaterial. You are stuck with your 'patri' name. No escape. Let me check that from my birth-chart (presently under my wife's safe-keeping), and I will inform the members here.
