I don't have a Hindu name, but that's no problem because maybe I will get one in the next life ;)

My name is Ashley. Depending on how far back you go it is either English (Meaning "A Valley of Ash Trees") or it is derived from Irish ( Ashling, meaing "Spirit") I like both meanings.

Nor do I. I just have one name in real life. (Several names on various forums) Having a Hindu name insinuates there is also a non-Hindu name. Similarly I don't worship any Hindu God. I just worship God, period.

Then why did you need to change it all those years ago?

I've always just had one name, except somewhere along the way it changed. It's like trading in a car, and getting a new car. You still have one car, not two cars. Just a different car.

Nobody 'needs' to change a name. I chose to. I believe you just have one name, no?

Most wonderful, Rama/Ramdas/Ramadasprasad, what a beautiful long name, weighty. The name I like the most is Sivaramakrishnan but my son would not allow me to name one of my grandsons in that way. Another name refused was Varenya for the younger grandson to go with Aradhya of the first. But I had to adjust with their desires. :D

Namaste,

Shivaramakrishnan is the best name for a typical Hindu IMHO, it encompass all Avatar and Shiva as well. I reckon we should all add this to our names, then no one can say that Hindus are not organised. lol

I would be called Shivaramakrishnan sirvapillayraman suratmilkni ramdasprasad......... Hope this fits on my drivers license..

Shantanu is my real name, but for the sake of brevity I am known in the United Kingdom as just Shan.
Shantanu means a lot, an image of peace; and a historical figure in one of the epics as King Shantanu. I try to be peaceful but within the need to live a dignified existence in truth and harmony.

A Sri Lankan friend of mine goes by Tom because on about the second week here he jaywalked. The officer issuing a ticket got quite frustrated with the last name, so for the second (first) name my friend just said 'Tom'. After telling friends the story, it stuck.

That is an interesting story with a ring of truth in it. Westerners are either too lazy or do not have the ability to pronounce complicated foreign names. I think they just do not care enough.

In this case it was also one of those forms with boxes where you put the letters, and it wasn't long enough. The entire naming system was a hassle as well, as Tamils don't carry a last name. The father's name becomes their first name, but they go by thier given name, which is the last name.

My last name rarely fits on forms as well!

Sri Lankan friends of mine tend to use short forms of their surnames. Sinhalas often have long surnames!
