Telling someone they are going to hell: religious Duty or Not your place to say?

Quite frankly, neither. It is not a very useful teaching, and its drawbacks far outweight any constructive use.

Many religions claim that their adherents are going to heaven, and the non believers are going to hell. Abrahamic religions have pushed this but even eastern religions believe this even.

I suppose that is true to some extent, but I don't think it is well regarded among any non-Abrahamic believers I ever met.

My take on this is if someone tells me that I am going to hell, then it is my fundamental argument that a persons virtues is determined by his actions on earth.

The audacity of a person telling me going to hell makes me wonder who gave them the right to tell me. I am not a walk away type of person so it would be difficult for me to reason with an animal like that.

Any thoughts?

Diagnosting someone as "hell-bound" is indeed a display of lack of consideration, or perhaps a sincere worry (albeit still curious). It will depend on the attitude, but it is never comendable.

It is however wise to try and determine what led one to say you such things. Some people are sincere and well-meaning when they say such things, and those deserve a bit of gentleness when dealt with.

Others, however, are hypocritical thugs in denial and may well deserve rude words. It is important to talk to people at the level and language that they accept and understand.

I think people should keep it to themselves,
You may be going to hell but I'm sure you won't want me reminding you ;)

Even if you could prove the existence of hell, which personally I don't believe in, how would you know for sure someone is going there? Who makes that call and based on what?

I often tell other drivers who cut me while their speakers blust the kind of tunes which obviously point to horrid taste in music to go to hell and on occasion to go and multiply and fill the earth. But I am not sure I ever considered it to be a religious duty, it's more of a tradition.

Do preachers or priests do this in church and then members feel like they are righteous when they do it to others?

So scripture wise, the bible specifically does not require christians to tell non-believers this? Where does it originate from then? How did these two concepts become associated aka the bridge?

I'm not familiar with any passage in the NT that instructs Christians to threaten others with hell. In the entirety of Paul's letters he never even once mentions the subject. If you are talking about the Great Commission it states this:

“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

The command is to make disciples, which means students, and to teach those students what Jesus taught. These would be people willing and open to being instructed.

I don't think it is anyone's duty to tell any particular person they are going to hell because only God knows each person's thoughts and heart and where they stand with Him. Nevertheless, the biblical scriptures are clear that everyone sins and all are headed for destruction without the saving power of Jesus Christ. So I believe to inform others of this in a general sense is of eternal significance.

To me, unless you actually see yourself as having any say in the matter when the time comes, I'd say it's not your place to say.

I don't subscribe to belief in Heaven or Hell but even if I did why would it be my place to tell someone that? Am I God? Do I truly know a person's heart and actions? No I do not, and neither does anyone else.

"Abrahamic religions", sub a stupid term when used in ignorant generalization.

Anyways, preaching hell is a dangerous game. On one side, people have a right to believe what they want and discuss is, and in some cases, preaching hell is out of genuine concern for the soul of others. Sadly, life and psychology are not as shallow as surface appearence. Especially in cases of life long exposure, hell preaching can deeply affec the mind of individuals. I know former Christians who still battle with the fear, even non Christians who feel the fear now and then. Further, the fear mongering is used to push a warped, self depreciating, dangerous system of morality an conduct that intereferes with the non-harmf Will of others and even has taken its toll on society.

So you consider it virtuous to refer to anyone who doesnt agree with you as an animal

You are twisting my words. You are probably the type that says this kind of stuff to people and one day soon hopefully it will land you face first on the ground. Telling someone to go to hell is beyond excessive and unnecessary. If someone were to hit some one that did say that, it would be okay. I mean, they are saying you are going to rot in eternal hell, then they can get their tenfold. Why does anyone need to preach their religion that teaches enough hate that if you are not with them you will suffer. I do not care what religion you are. You can try to minimize it as much as you want but this is not just some simple disagreement.

Every time I hear that, I think of this verse. Sometimes the King James Version just sounds better.

"
Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth."
(Proverbs 27:1)

Oh well, in that case I believe you should go to hell.

Sometimes it's a religious duty.
Other times it's an insult or imprecation.
Either way, I'm OK.

For me it was a way to motivate.

I was receiving calls for a religious network and a guy called in saying that he wanted to leave his homosexual situation but was having trouble doing so. After a while he said he just couldn't leave, whereupon I told him to go to hell. He said Christians aren't supposed to say that. I said "what do you think Jesus will say to you?"

I didnt twist your words, I quoted them.
So now youve gone fron name calling to violence and theres no place for them on earth
Sounds like Hilter taking about the Jews
But of course your a virtuous person
Jesus told people they were going to hell over and over, so I suppose your approve of his murder, of course only as a virtuous person

You hear what you want to. Do you tell people that they are going to hell if they are not christian? I don't give 2 cents about jesus. That concept is a joke and not relevant to me.
