I think trades will be a boon as an alternative to college.

Anything to help people achieve independence and self capable I'm all for. No partisanship along those lines for sure.

I'm still miffed I need to register my ONN television just to have a repair with an agreement it's only at an authorized repair shop of its choosing and not mine.

I just donated my TV to the self taught module of television repair for dummies. *grin*
Does anyone repair TVs any more -- or any appliances, for that matter? It/s become easier just to replace them.

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.

Not if it's an expensive set. I can see a small screen but a 50 inch or larger? I would think its more cost effective to find a repair job rather than going out and buying another one.

Yeah. And it's not necessarily cheaper or easier to get a new one.
Common problems are heat related and fixed with a fresh layer of thermal paste, but more commonly a good dusting takes care of the problem.
Faulty wire connection that is lose.
Blown fuse.
Bad harddrive.
Drained battery.
Unless it's a smart phone with very small parts that are expensive, tiny and tedious to work with, and very easy to break it's most likely going to be cheaper and easier to do a repair.

If it's comprised of (replaceable) parts, it's usually cheaper to replace the faulty part. Unfortunately 1. things are much more integrated now. What once were multiple parts are now a block. 2. Parts are much more expensive for consumers than they are for producers. 3. Diagnosing and replacing can be labour intensive.

One way to tackle at least one part of the problem is to force producers to take appliances back at the end of their life cycle so it doesn't end up in a landfill. That also gives an incentive to produce for maintainability as they might have to reuse the parts.

Diagnosing for many things can be done with a web search and reading over forums. Even with cars and having the CEL codes, a we. search with those codes and symptoms can significantly help in finding out the exact problem.

I try to do some repairs myself and that ends often in the realization that I just worked for 2€/hour especially if the thing wasn't that expensive to begin with.

It's an important issue. Corporations put anti-consumer clauses in their terms of use, and they don't care if we are excessively burdened by it.
We need a formal right to repair.
Tesla’s $16,000 Quote for a $700 Fix Is Why Right to Repair Matters

And the fix was relatively simple.

But Tesla doesn't believe in Right to Repair or consumer choice.

So, do a repair they don't authorize or approve, and lose access to a charging network. I don't see how that isn't extortion.
And have a complaint or question about it? Oh well. Telsa did away with that department.
Tesla does worse than that.

Not surprised. Tesla is a nasty company. It's amazing that anyone can actually like the company because it's anti-worker, anti-consumer, and very literally a public danger.
It's also a nasty company that exists solely because
of huge tax subsidies. Musk can go take a flying
**** at a rolling donut. (My apologies to donuts.)

I can say something positive about him.
He's got better legs than Putin
And bigger **** than Cher
(It's the line from Eric Idle's song, "Henry Kissinger".
We'll see when Musk is Putin's age. My money is on Putin looking better at that age.

This is tangentially related, but I tend to think it might be better if car production and distribution was socialized, in large part. If you need parts, taxes would discount costs, and there would be less parts to need. A government unit might also be dispatched to repair your car. Cars/driving is a social efficiency issue. Why is it privatized?

Because cars are small. They are more private than those modes of transport that often are socialised or subsidised. Buses, trains, undergrounds, some fairies, everything that moves masses deserves to be socialized, cars, not so much.
