When my wife and I wanted to buy a home, I wanted to buy a place outside of town - 6 acres and a manufactured home.

She wanted to live in the city on a .05 acre lot in a bigger, nicer house. They say if mama aint happy aint nobody happy. So we did that.

Three years later we have a natural gas boom. Not so much a boom as a BOOM!!

We got $750 for our oil lease. Our friends in the country got $45k and up - some of them way up.

A buddy of mine asked the folks drilling on his land how much he could expect to gain from royalties... he said, "Sir, you're going to get more than you can spend."

This is proving to be true. I heard that Brittany Spears earns about $100k give or take monthly. My buddy makes $75k a month from his natural gas.
He keeps his job as a high school football coach.

Another friend makes $45k a month, sometimes as much as $65k. From my puny .05 acres I get zip - zilch - nada.

Seems to me like mama would have been happy striking it rich in my little manufactured home on beautiful six acres of Texas country.

Welcome to the club....I coulda shoulda woulda too, but it always
seems like I do the wrong thing. I bought commercial real estate in MI before 2001.
I sank my profits into stocks in 2007. I might have well just had a bonfire for the money.
But on occasion, I've done the smart thing, so perhaps there's hope for you too.

Come & listen to my story 'bout a man named Angellous
a poor preach'n man, barely kept his family....you know the rest, except you ain't living
in Beverly Hills (actually the house is in Bel Air) with a see ment pond & billy ard room.

It was on fire when I laid down on it.
Well, that Texas oil stuff is pretty random. My husband and I lived on 18 acres in East Texas. We got $20,000 several years ago for a pipeline easement across the back of our land. But that was it.

Then they drilled a well back through the brush and there was nothing there - dry as a bone.

So...you may have gotten something, or maybe not. Don't beat yourself up about it!

True. Next time we're buying land. Period. :p

As for my buddy getting all the money, I couldn't think of a better person to prosper. He lost his son last year and it really crushed him. This guy was a high school football coach who had a window cleaning business on the side, struggling to make ends meet for years.

The lady friend also is a wonderful person, but she's in a lousy marriage. Now she's able to do some things that he's been holding her back from.

Look on the bright side, I'm betting you make more than the $800 I do every month cooking and washing dishes. With my physics background I potentially have a lot more to contribute to society than Brittany Spears does...sigh... Oh well, I've never been all that concerned with financial gain, so I guess I shouldn't be suprised that I don't gain finances. As far as your friends and their rediculous wealth, I'd rather be skilled but poor than lucky and rich.

How's their water quality after the Fracking?

I live surrounded by oil and natural gas drilling. My husband is an oil and gas consultant who works on the fracking side of things all over the Ark-La-Tex area (and has worked in over 30 countries as well).

Our water is regularly tested and we receive the results in the mail. The only issues have been unrelated to oil and gas production - we get our city water from the Sabine River and when it gets very low, our water can taste sort of "muddy." So we installed a filter system in our home to avoid that taste in the dead of summer.

The filtered water does taste GREAT though - so I'm glad we did it.

If you have any questions about fracking, I can get some realistic answers for you from a very reputable and knowledgeable source. ;)

Thats good. I'd rather people like this luck into money than total jerks who don't really need it.

It could be that I just have good friends. I do wish that they would take an interest in funding my education. :p

And, I'm sure that we've got more than our fair share of jerks who are benefitting from this.

Nobody NEEDS this much money. Hey, I have a great idea - let's tax the hell out of them and redistribute a big ol' chunk of that money to other people - whether they are total jerks or not!
