I didn't know that...interesting...so If you find gold or diamonds in your back yard, then they belong to the queen or the local bishop or what?

The bits you found would be yours, but you could not start mining with out buying the mining rights from the Government. Miniral rights for oil, gas, coal, gold and silver are Crown property. all other mineral rights can belong to the land owner or freeholder.

Diamonds and other precious stones are not crown property... but then we do not have any.

Wow, you really think that people would buy less gas if the prices were higher?

Absolutely...I've watched this personally. High prices, & especially rising prices drive the kinds of vehicles people buy, & decisions
about commuting & trips. I see it among all my friends & associates. I'm in favor of a huge increase in fuel tax, offset by reductions
in other areas, of course. This single step would use the free market to let people sort out their own solutions, which would result in
cleaner air, less fossil fuel dependence, more use of public transportation, & I would hope more biking & walking.
Sure, shipping costs would rise some, but my plan would reduce the tax burden.

This suggestion is not very popular, btw.

This is not widespread - unless you're counting taxi services and some services for the elderly or disabled.
I agree that we should invest in research and development of alternative fuels, and our federal, state, and local governments provide many tax incentives, grants and low interest loans to encourage companies to invest in research and development.

Our UK Transport system is not as good as it was before WW2 when even small villages were on the train network.
But with the 2nd most expensive fuel in the world, we have slowly adjusted our buildng programmes and life styles to suit this reality. Some low consumption cars even have zero road tax.
My daughter has a Toyota hybrid and saves both on fuel and road tax.
Now I am retired and do very few miles I can drive a Camry with out worrying about fuel costs.

It was on fire when I laid down on it.
I'm all for research and development for ways to be more economical when it comes to fuel consumption. I'm not meaning to imply otherwise.

I am seriously considering a hybrid the next go 'round myself.

For the life of me, though, I can't see how public transit would work well for the majority of workers in Texas - which is where I live. Metropolitan areas, yes. But largely rural areas? I can't see it working well.

I oppose an over-reliance on public transportation. It can be a good thing, but just look at what regularly happens in
France when the goons in that industry go on strike. Who wants their mobility to be at the complete mercy of unions?

The unions are more sophisticated than that in france... They block the motorways and trunk roads too. when they stop transport, TRANSPORT STOPS

I wish Angelous would have bought the manufactured home on 6 acres. It would have been a hoot to see him vote Republican to get some tax relief.

Yes, and Freedom Fries.

We're not big on sanitizing language. We eat "french fries", "french toast", "belgian waffles", "danishes"
& "sour kraut"....usually not mixed together though, which is more of a Canadian tradition.

Yeah, down here those would be "freedom fries," "freedom toast," Battle of the Bulge waffles," "Blondes," and "Bad German Cabbages."
