The Burning of Quran – A Modern Act of Barbarism

Why do you think the OP is okay with those things?

I don't. That is why I asked him. I said:

And what about Muslims in the Middle East who burn American flags, shout "Death to America", and worse than that chop off peoples' heads? Are you prepared to call them barbarians?

What is more barbaric: Chopping of a prisoner's head, or burning a book? Sorry bub, but until you condemn Muslims who commit REAL barbaric acts your indignation has no credibility

An act is barbaric only in extend of pain it inflict on subject that the act is being perpetrated on. When you burn a book, WHICH EVER HOLY BOOK that is so very dear to someone, especially to an extreme believer/s – then it is barbaric. Remember, pain and suffering does not translate to any specific standard, it varies.

As far as the discussion of retaliation, well … see above. USA bombed the crap out of Japan, and in the end “nuked” it… To some the retaliation for Pearl Harbor with end result of ton more dead (as in kids and women and all nine yards) to comparison is “barbaric” also, and of course some will disagree…

What has this got to do with anything?

Burning books in general is barbaric.

Burning a book that you know more than a billion people around the world hold dear is also stupid, hateful and disgusting.

All you have to say is that this is not a holy book to non-Muslims?

Well, thanks, thats pretty obvious though.

The point is that non-muslims have no duty of respect toward the quran or toward islam. Not being a muslim means that one does not agree that islam is true.

That muslims hold the quran dear is their own business. Others may legitimately despise both the quran and islam. If the muslims don't like that, tough. They need to grow up and learn to live in this world that has a variety of opinions about religion.

if muslims could demonstrate clearly that their religion is true, they might have a case for respect. However, that cannot be done for any religion.

Books are just paper. It seems perverse to worship one. I thought muslims were against idolatry.

I DO tend to agree, but can't help but think that it SHOULD serve as a wake up call to said extreme believers that they are taking themselves and their religion just a bit too seriously. What they cannot fathom is that some folks do not take them seriously - at all - and are quite unimpressed by their pathetic howling and moral outrage.

Moral equivalency tends to make such a point moot however.

The burning of religious books has been documented in history many times before. Such heinous acts are a proof of the hatred of people towards a certain concept or teaching. However, contrary to the popular belief, the burning of religious books in not only limited to Quran. Many other religions have been a victim of such atrocious activities to subdue the person or religion behind a teaching or concept.

The link does not work (for me).
Book burning is sure barbaric and wrong.
But it was also wrong of the Taliban to destroy the ancient Buddha statues in Afganisthan.
In comparison to that, the Quran burning event of that crazzy pastor is just an insignificant act of a single idiot and his smal group of likewise idiotic followers.
Why?
Because burning the Quran does not mean to destroy it's content, you can buy it in booshopy and read it on web.
But those statues may be lost forever.

Of course it saddens me to hear about anyone burning another's holy book. However, I find it beyond disturbing when people react just as those who burn the book want them to. It just proves their point, does it not?

I fail to understand what burning flags, buildings, people, etc. will serve in terms of disproving the stereotypes. There is nothing wrong with being upset, but find a constructive way to react...perhaps starting with bettering yourself and reacting NON-violently.

Anyone who has read my posts knows that I strongly condemn violent behavior in general, and especially in cases like this.

It kinda tickles me when I see some idiot on T.V. trying to oraganize the burning of a Holy Qur'an. I mean, seriously, aren't they all Christians ? Just goes to show what kind of class they have. And why are we burning Qur'ans ? Because of 9/11 ? Yeah, that was damn near 10 years ago. The fact of the matter is if Muslims really wanted to kill Americans -- we'd be dead.

Reality is that since 9/11, there hasn't been a single attack on American soil. And don't even try and tell me it is because our government is stopping all these so-called threats. I think you should look inside your own government or a shadow government before you go on blaming Muslims for 9/11.

Seriously now, are you telling me that if a Muslim was hell-bent on killing innocent Americans, he couldn't do it ? Sure you can say it happened at Fort Hood - i'm not denying that, but still. Has it happened at a shopping Mall or a Movie Theatre or something like that ? No.

Reality is Islam is the fastest growing religion on the planet. People are scared of this, christians are scared of this. One day Islam will have the biggest following of people in the world. I can't wait for that day. What a glorious day that will be.

If anything the Bible should be thrown in the gutter for the endless amount of contradictions in it. Hell, most people who believe in the Bible can't even agree on who god is- Jesus or Jehovah. Then you have Jehovah Witnesses running around saying Hell doesn't exist, ect, and that Trinity is B.S. Then, on the other hand, there are people who say Trinity is real. What a bunch of nonsense. My advice is to drop your Bible and go pick up a Holy Qur'an and educate yourself.

Also, what did you think about people setting LeBron James' Jersey on Fire when he left Cleveland and went to Miami ? roflmfao. get out of here.

Well, true... if all Muslims WERE, in fact, terrorists - for sure. However, most are normal human animals that are just trying to make their way through this world.

I am sensing a "truther". *sigh*

Or the plot to bring down planes heading to America from England, or a "Shoe" bomber, or a attempt to attack a US military base, or a group in Canada who were cooking up some obscene plot... or... or... or... or...

Reality is Islam is the fastest growing religion on the planet.
This is one of those big lies. The fact is that Islam is not the fastest growing religion. Last time I checked it was the Wiccan religion, but I guess it depends how one cooks the books.

People are scared of this, christians are scared of this. One day Islam will have the biggest following of people in the world.
I wouldn't pop the champagne cork out of the bottle just yet. That day is still a long way off. There are far more Christians already on the planet... I'm just saying...

I can't wait for that day. What a glorious day that will be.
Frankly, I can't think of many things MORE revolting... I don't want to be in a position where I have to tolerate your religion more than I already do. Now our leader harp that "Islam is a religion of peace" but if it got significantly stronger you can bet your Qur'an that it would quickly be labeled as a "clear and present danger".

I did. I've read it several times, in fact, and remained quite unimpressed. I don't have to look too far to see where the maniacs are getting their ideas - that is for sure.

I'm not Alex Jones but the fact of the matter is there is far more evidence supporting an inside job than there is supporting your governments account of what happened that day. Don't ask me to do your homework for you, either.

Or the plot to bring down planes heading to America from England, or a "Shoe" bomber, or a attempt to attack a US military base, or a group in Canada who were cooking up some obscene plot... or... or... or... or...

Planes heading from America to England ( Dec 2001 ) Richard Reid ( Shoe Bomber, 2002 ) the others I don't know nor do I care. Fact of the matter is NOBODY could stop some American Muslim from purchasing a handgun and going on a killing spree. That's the cold hard reality. And reality is that has yet to happen ( 10 years later )...

So, please, try again.

I wouldn't pop the champagne cork out of the bottle just yet. That day is still a long way off. There are far more Christians already on the planet... I'm just saying...

The whole Islam being the number 1 fastest growing religion came from " Perry Stone " some hardcore Muslim-Hating Christian. Go Figure. I'm sure you know all about him too.

I did. I've read it several times, in fact, and remained quite unimpressed. I don't have to look too far to see where the maniacs are getting their ideas - that is for sure.

I'll bet you haven't read a single Surah, nevermind the whole thing. Reality is the Holy Qur'an is intellectually superior to the Bible on so many levels it's not even fair to compare the two. The Bible was made for little school kids. The Holy Qur'an, on the other hand, was made for educated people.

Just shows how up-to-date you are on wordly things. Probably too busy reading your Bible trying to figure out which god to worship - Jesus or Jehovah. roflmfao.

By all means... I agree but just wanted to establish source of ones perspective on barbaric.

As distasteful as I find the burning of books, I don't think it can be called barbarism due to the fact as no one can really burn every copy ever printed. (If someone does burn the only copy of something, then that is just plain cruelty to the writer).

It would be an even reader cruelty to the reader who could have used the knowledge.

I must keep in mind that you are actually being serious. Believe as you wish.

Actually, the shoe would be on the Muslim foot to "try again". :)

Never heard of said dork. I have actually researched this a number of times. Are you suggesting your "fact" boils down to the ranting of a fundamentalist Christian? Seriously?

I'll bet you haven't read a single Surah, nevermind the whole thing.
I'd have to take your money then. The fact is I have read several different English translations, in their entirety over the last 10 years, and also hundreds of Hadith and spent many, many hours on authentic Islamic sites listening to and interacting with Muslims. Further to this, I regularly peruse a compendium of translations to get a fuller, richer understanding of translations at Compared Translations of the meaning of the Quran (You might want to check it out.)

Reality is the Holy Qur'an is intellectually superior to the Bible on so many levels it's not even fair to compare the two. The Bible was made for little school kids. The Holy Qur'an, on the other hand, was made for educated people.
Which is, of course, why it was "handed down" to an uneducated, illiterate for consumption by a population that was also uneducated and illiterate. Brilliant. Forgive me, but there are so many contradictions in the Qur'an that it is actually a hysterical idea that the Qur'an is "error free". Well, it is, when you move the goal posts far enough apart or simply keep moving them. :)

Just shows how up-to-date you are on wordly things. Probably too busy reading your Bible trying to figure out which god to worship - Jesus or Jehovah. roflmfao.
I doubt very much that anyone, in their right mind, could describe me as a Christian, let alone a foaming at the mouth, fundamentalist Christian. Do you always score so poorly when judging others? My guess is you are very young.

As someone who has written all of their life, it wouldn't strike me as being an act of cruelty if someone chose to burn one (or some) of my efforts. It really wouldn't bother me at all. Anything I have written, I can redo, if it warrants and usually exceed the scope and quality of the original in the process. Nothing is forever.

Well it largely depends on the reason behind the burning because clearly there is a difference between making a political arguement and attempting to irradicate Islam. Its also entirely possible that dislike of a particular religion or at least its interepration is perfectly warranted therefore burning the books in defiance of this interpretation can be seen as entirely commendable.

Atrocity is really too strong a word when it comes to burning books. Personally I believe that its more appropriate to use to such a word to describe acts such as burning people instead. I believe that burning the Quran could be describe as inconsiderate to Muslims although I wouldn't want to indulge the irrational elavation of books to a position where they are considered by some to be more important than the lives of people, as we saw when some Muslims set about murdering people because an American burned a Quran.

Proportional response? I think not.

So Muslims have to condemn all fellow Muslims who do bad things every time before they criticize anything they find bad, if that thing is somehow considered related to the same concept?

Also, your question sounds to me like you already had the inclination that the OP wouldn't condemn those things.

The point is that non-muslims have no duty of respect toward the quran or toward islam.

Yeah, unfortunately thats not what we're talking about. Try to put more effort please.

Not being a muslim means that one does not agree that islam is true.

Not necessarily actually, but i know what you mean. And sadly again thats not what we're talking about.

That muslims hold the quran dear is their own business. Others may legitimately despise both the quran and islam. If the muslims don't like that, tough. They need to grow up and learn to live in this world that has a variety of opinions about religion.

Since its not clear for you based on what you said so far, there is a difference between me not liking something and despising and criticizing it etc... and between burning a book to make that supposed statement.

if muslims could demonstrate clearly that their religion is true, they might have a case for respect. However, that cannot be done for any religion.

I hope you manage at some point to realize whats the topic here.

Books are just paper. It seems perverse to worship one. I thought muslims were against idolatry.

You thought right, thats why Muslims worship god alone.

That aside, i hope your next response will be more relevant.
