That's not so bad though. Have you decided your ultimate goal?
Right now my goal is to finish my degree. To be honest I haven't made much plans after that. It seems too far down the road to be saying, I want to work "here". I'm really trying to keep many options open and not paint myself into a corner. Things seem to change so quickly, that to me it seems best to focus on one step at a time.

I talked with a fella from India about hinduism. He said in his country religon is tool to control the people and very bad. He believes in something but not in using religion as a political tool. I am readinga book called Princess which I can get the isbn number on later and edit in this post. It talks about women in saudi arabia and Islamic law. It is the most difficult book I have ever read. I don't know if I can finish it because it made me so depressed. I am 1/2 through it now. My friend who is a baptist is considering marrying his gf who is a buddhist. I spent one afternoon telling him about the four noble truths mentioning there is an 8 fold-path in that religion and talking about dharma and karma. His first reaction was uneasyness at an atheist talking to him about religion but than he decided an atheist can be educated in what he does not believe in . I told him he should take her to the buddhist temple in north austin but to remove his p-diddy looking earing before going. He and I are real good friends.

Hello everyone,

Looks like a cool thread. Are we discussing personal goals? My current one is to get a comic book published and I am very close. Hopefully it will be on the shelf by next summer. Does that sound like a strange goal for a guy in his 40s?

Trey, that sounds very cool! I envy those who can draw well. My stick figures aren't even straight (pun intended). Do you have anything online you can show us? Make sure to let us know when you are published so we can support you!

Maize: What sort of work do you want to do? Or do you know yet? I gather from your statement that geography is the most important factor for you, correct? Are you trying to stay close to family? So many questions, I know...

Robtex: Sounds like a great discussion. You seem to have a wide variety of friends.

Trey: This thread is just for general fellowship, like coffee hour after service. Welcome to our corner of RF.

As for me, I'm still waiting to hear back from that job. I spoke with the plant manager last Friday, and things look like they will work out, but I don't know quite when just yet. Soon enough though.

I'm in a local band, and we've got our second gig coming up soon. Only two more practices before we play, and a lot to cover in those. The first one went well though, so I expect this one will too. Now if we could only finalize our name...

I am so excited about the fall! There are so many things going at my church and many of them are fun, new things. I think I've mentioned on here before that I am the Fellowship coordinator at my church. I took the position with the understanding that I wasn't just going to be counting kitchen supplies and cleaning up coffee every week. I'm working with all the different committees to get them "out" (more visible might be a better phrase) in the church. I'm trying to create more fellowship and fun time and using the committees to do it.

Working with people, research, in an academic setting... vague, I ,know.

As for geography, last year I moved away from all my family in Kentucky to come to Virginia. But I'd rather not move again anytime soon, unless I really have to. I do like this area (even though I know you've heard me call VA a backward, bleep, bleep, bleep of a state), I love my church and having already had to leave one church (when I moved here) I'm so not ready to do that again anytime soon. That was the hardest part of moving for me. Plus my kids are in school and need some stability with that.

Well, I'm at a community college right now mainly because it is so much cheaper than the 4 year universities. So right now I'm working on a Social Science, AS. After that I plan to transfer to a 4 year school, probably VCU (Virginia Commonwealth University). What I'll major in there I keep flip-flopping on. But with the AS in Social Science I could go on to major in Anthropology, Sociology, Psychology or even Social Work.

Hey Maize,

I envy artists as well and my artistic ability is probably on par with yours. I am just a writer. Comics require a team of creators to get the final product. We just signed our artist for my book and we start production soon. When we have some samples finished we'll have a website and I will send a link. Within a few weeks I think.

Hi BrandonE,

I love coffee hour after service, although we call it corner forum. We UUs have the best conversations don't we?

Nothing wrong with vague. Better to find what you love, and if that involves uncertainty, so be it.

Understandable. What took you from KY to VA, if I may ask?

I play saxophone, and the name of our band is up in the air right now. We started as Port City Music, but the mission/direction of the band has changed slightly recently (long story), so we're trying to decide on a new name. I've made a ton of suggestions thus far, but the frontrunner seems to be "Tiny Little Vandals", though it isn't set in stone yet. There is some music on the website at www.portcitymusic.com but it is not necessarily representative of the band, and is just the solo recordings of our primary songwriter (ties into that long story I mentioned). We do play some of those songs, but the band versions are slightly different.

I have some music I've done on my own up at http://www.musicv2.com/artist/pagene but it's not my best stuff, as I do better work with collaborators. We are working on a band version of "entirely, once", which is on that page, but it will sound dramatically different in a band setting.

I play the sax! Well, to be honest I haven't played in years, but I use to. That's awesome! I'll check out your music sometime I have a little more time online.

Cool. :) I played all through school and my first year of college. Didn't touch it for a long time, then picked it up a couple of years ago to play with the guys I'm in a band with now. It's mostly like riding a bicycle - comes back pretty quick. I still don't practice like I should, but I can play the simple lines that our music calls for.

Oh, don't expect any sax on any of the music on my site or the band's site yet. We should have some band recordings that include me playing before too much longer, but for now, all the band stuff is just one of the guys solo stuff (though it is very good - he's the most talented songwriter of us all).

We had a flower communion at church today! It was the first one I'd ever been to so it was exciting. It was a beautiful ceremony, I was glad to take part in it.

I'm also excited because next week our normal services begin again so our minister will be speaking (and we're also having a water communion). When do your normal services resume?

Our 2 services (versus the one service during the summer) begins next week with our Ingathering and Water Communion.

Water Communion/Ingathering will be held next week. Our new Interim Minister will begin his time with us that week too. This will be our first male minister in ages.

I"m not sure why I'm so lethargic on Sunday afternoons. I don't want to say church wears me out, but it certainly does take a lot of energy sometimes. Getting two kids ready to go to church in the morning definitely takes a lot of energy sometimes. Anyone else feel this way? Like you just want to nap after church?

Not me. After church is band practice on most Sundays, so I'm always excited. :) If it weren't for that though, I'd be right there with you on the Sunday naps. I think it's a cumulative effect from the rest of the week catching up to us. You finally relax just a little and WHAM, you realize how tired you are.

Tea? Not coffee?

Just kidding. I love tea. Earl grey by any chance? Love the bergamot. Or a nice light oolong.

I don't have kids so I have no excuse, but I'd say just about every afternoon finds me lethargic. Probably the combination of going to sleep late and getting up early. In the mornings my mind is on what I have to do so I'm not sleepy. But by late afternoon when the busiest stuff is over I'm ready for a nap. And there's something delicious about sleeping in the afternoon. Of course, if you can't sleep, iced coffee or tea is delicious too.
