The Coffee House - the UU Fellowship Thread

I love UUs.

I just got home from a meeting. Everytime someone would seem to get a little frustrated or even angry, someone else (usually one of the moderaters, as this is their job) would step in, calm the situation and move the discussion forward and two minutes we would all be laughing at something. It's just amazing how we work together. I love these people and am grateful everyday for having them in my life.

My thanksgiving was great. I went down to my sister's. It was just 4 of us adults and my nephew. There was good food and a lot of laughter. I couldn't have asked for a better day.

Thanksgiving was also great. Small, intimate gathering with my parents, younger brother, his girlfriend, and my grandparents. Lots of food- great fellowship. Couldn't ask for anything more.

I'm sorry to post this here... but I just don't know how to cope with anthing anymore. My health is just dragging me so far down and so many other things I can't talk about right now, I just wish I could have a good cry with someone. :(

Hi jamaesi. I'm an infrequent visitor to this forum but a regular at First UU Church of Columbus, and I'm really sorry to hear about the rough times you're going through. As you've hopefully found after attending a bit, we have a deeply caring UU community here in Columbus and whatever you are going through you do not have to go through it alone. Rev. Wendy, in particular, was extremely helpful to someone I know during some very difficult times, and since she specializes in pastoral care she is definitely the go-to person for any kind of community support.

Churches are for good times and for bad times, so don't hesitate to reach out. :group:

We should meet some Sunday. :)

Hehe, I know! :) I saw your post about it on the previous page of this thread. Glad you're still going, I think it's a good place. Though I hardly make it to a service anymore now that I've been recruited as a Sunday school teacher!

Anyhow, we usually don't stick around afterward (we have a bossy little kid who has little patience for boring grown-up stuff!) but I'd be happy to make an exception on a day when I don't have to teach. Maybe the week after next? PM me and we'll set something up!

I just learned moments ago that a friend and member of my congregation has Ovarian cancer - Stage IIIB. She starts chemo this week. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.

Hey,

Thanks for the warm welcome. :) I'm just sitting down with my morning coffee...Mmmmmmmmm. We have a nice little snow storm brewing out my way and I have The Beach Boys kicking out some good vibrations. I think it's going to be a nice day. I find this poem inspirational:

Desiderata

By Max Ehrmann

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender,
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even to the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons;
they are vexatious to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain or bitter,
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs,
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals,
and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love,
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment,
it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be.
And whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life,
keep peace in your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.
