Christ came to earth to go to the cross, is an important reminder of the price He paid to save sinners.
I suppose it can be both, depending on how you see it.
I see the cross as a symbol of love and what Jesus gave up for us. Yes, when you look into the cross actually meant - it's not the nicest symbol you could have, but it's at the very heart of Christianity.
Yet... there will always be people who see it differently.

Well, I'm not saying it's negative, I wanted to get others input on this. It does seem like there could be some negative connotation as the crucifixion opposed to the fish or something.
True. It could be argued though, that life isn't all baby lambs and flowers..life is not always nice... and Christianity understands that us humans do bad things.
The cross shows that through the bad... comes some very good things.

When my daughter broke her arm at school, they took her to a catholic-run hospital. The crucifixes they had hanging everywhere upset her.
It boggles the mind that some people think that an image of someone being tortured to death is a good thing to display. Urrrrrgh! Yuck!
I wonder if these crucifixes desensitize christians to human suffering.
And that's a good argument for it being a positive symbol.
I suspect the story about Jesus dying for us etc was the spin his followers put on his death. It lacks any credibility and is a very sick story. If humanity needed 'saving', surely an omnipotent deity could have devised a better plan than that!
Very good point, actually.Without the reality that the cross represents there is no hope for humanity, so in that sense it is a positive symbol.
