The Decline

IndigoChild5559

Loving God and my neighbor as myself.
"Christianity, the largest religion in the United States, experienced a 20th-century high of 91% of the total population in 1976. This declined to 73.7% by 2016 and 64% in 2022."

Just found this online.

And this other link seems to agree, despite the fact that I'm not a huge fan of Pews questions: In U.S., Decline of Christianity Continues at Rapid Pace

Why is Christianity in decline?

Are these people that were always atheists but now feel free to proclaim so? Are people actively leaving the church behind for better spiritual pursuits (for them)? Is Satan winning?

I have my ideas but I'll leave them at the doorstep for now.
There are many many reasons. At the risk of oversimplifying, I'll discuss just three of them.

Many Christians resist science, such as embracing creationism. This gives the religion a bad name, the religion that arrested Galileo. It's not that you can't embrace science and be Christian, so much as many science loving people just don't want to be associated with a group inclined to reject evolution or the Big Bang.

Second, Evangelical Christianity has unfortunately done a good job of associating religion with being right wing. Younger people are less inclined to be Republican (44% of Millennials are Independents). The growth of the Nones in America is directly related to the rejection of the religious right.

American culture has done a 180 degree turnaround regarding sexual morality. No one really cares anymore whether you are living together or having sex with someone you are not married to. The LGBT community has gained wide acceptance. The younger the generation, the less inclined they are to marry. Many simply do not want the sexual mores of the church. (In fact, even among those who remain active in Christianity, most do not keep its traditional morality.)

I thought I'd share the following quoted from a source that has a lot of information explaining why there's so much confusion going on in the world:

Christianity’s Problem

"Do not overlook the value of your spiritual heritage, the river of truth running down through the centuries, even to the barren times of a materialistic and secular age. In all your worthy efforts to rid yourselves of the superstitious creeds of past ages, make sure that you hold fast the eternal truth. But be patient! when the present superstition revolt is over, the truths of Jesus’ gospel will persist gloriously to illuminate a new and better way.

But paganized and socialized Christianity stands in need of new contact with the uncompromised teachings of Jesus; it languishes for lack of a new vision of the Master’s life on earth. A new and fuller revelation of the religion of Jesus is destined to conquer an empire of materialistic secularism and to overthrow a world sway of mechanistic naturalism. The world is now quivering on the very brink of one of its most amazing and enthralling epochs of social readjustment, moral quickening, and spiritual enlightenment.

The teachings of Jesus, even though greatly modified, survived the mystery cults of their birthtime, the ignorance and superstition of the dark ages, and are even now slowly triumphing over the materialism, mechanism, and secularism of the twentieth century. And such times of great testing and threatened defeat are always times of great revelation.

Religion does need new leaders, spiritual men and women who will dare to depend solely on Jesus and his incomparable teachings. If Christianity persists in neglecting its spiritual mission while it continues to busy itself with social and material problems, the spiritual renaissance must await the coming of these new teachers of Jesus’ religion who will be exclusively devoted to the spiritual regeneration of men. And then will these spirit-born souls quickly supply the leadership and inspiration requisite for the social, moral, economic, and political reorganization of the world.

The modern age will refuse to accept a religion which is inconsistent with facts and out of harmony with its highest conceptions of truth, beauty, and goodness. The hour is striking for a rediscovery of the true and original foundations of present-day distorted and compromised Christianity—the real life and teachings of Jesus.

Primitive man lived a life of superstitious bondage to religious fear. Modern, civilized men dread the thought of falling under the dominance of strong religious convictions. Thinking man has always feared to be held by a religion. When a strong and moving religion threatens to dominate him, he invariably tries to rationalize, traditionalize, and institutionalize it, thereby hoping to gain control of it. By such procedure, even a revealed religion becomes man-made and man-dominated. Modern men and women of intelligence evade the religion of Jesus because of their fears of what it will do to them—and with them. And all such fears are well founded. The religion of Jesus does, indeed, dominate and transform its believers, demanding that men dedicate their lives to seeking for a knowledge of the will of the Father in heaven and requiring that the energies of living be consecrated to the unselfish service of the brotherhood of man.

Selfish men and women simply will not pay such a price for even the greatest spiritual treasure ever offered mortal man. Only when man has become sufficiently disillusioned by the sorrowful disappointments attendant upon the foolish and deceptive pursuits of selfishness, and subsequent to the discovery of the barrenness of formalized religion, will he be disposed to turn wholeheartedly to the gospel of the kingdom, the religion of Jesus of Nazareth.

The world needs more firsthand religion. Even Christianity—the best of the religions of the twentieth century—is not only a religion about Jesus, but it is so largely one which men experience secondhand. They take their religion wholly as handed down by their accepted religious teachers. What an awakening the world would experience if it could only see Jesus as he really lived on earth and know, firsthand, his life-giving teachings! Descriptive words of things beautiful cannot thrill like the sight thereof, neither can creedal words inspire men’s souls like the experience of knowing the presence of God. But expectant faith will ever keep the hope-door of man’s soul open for the entrance of the eternal spiritual realities of the divine values of the worlds beyond.

Christianity has dared to lower its ideals before the challenge of human greed, war-madness, and the lust for power; but the religion of Jesus stands as the unsullied and transcendent spiritual summons, calling to the best there is in man to rise above all these legacies of animal evolution and, by grace, attain the moral heights of true human destiny.

Christianity is threatened by slow death from formalism, overorganization, intellectualism, and other nonspiritual trends. The modern Christian church is not such a brotherhood of dynamic believers as Jesus commissioned continuously to effect the spiritual transformation of successive generations of mankind.

So-called Christianity has become a social and cultural movement as well as a religious belief and practice. The stream of modern Christianity drains many an ancient pagan swamp and many a barbarian morass; many olden cultural watersheds drain into this present-day cultural stream as well as the high Galilean tablelands which are supposed to be its exclusive source."

I thought they were alligators.
I guess that would make more sense, wouldn't it? But imagine how cute little green mice would be...

Anyway, anyone who things that alligators, or crocodilians in general, haven't changed in the last couple hundred million years is misinformed.

Also, alligator church attendance is practically nonexistent.

In my experience part of the problem is that Christianity at least as it is seen and practiced in the US is more of a brand now, then it is a reasonable theological framework, ideology, philosophy or set of moral codes.

This is what it appears to have become:

Two connected factors were the impact of Liberalism, starting at the hippy generation of the 1970's, and second was the decline of the nuclear family in favor of alternate life styles with a lot of overhead; big government dumb down. The hippie movement was a movement away from formal religion in favor of spirituality. This new spirituality was more of an overlap and amalgam of East, West and Indigenous religions.

This change into open minded spirituality was fine for the hippies, since most had been trained as Christians, and had a good moral platform for human rights and love your neighbor; love generation. The poor dress and long hair and beard was copying Jesus, but with an indigenous psychotropic twist; marijuana and mushrooms.

However, the next generation; their children, copied their outer ways, but had less solid platform within structured religion, so they did not understand spirituality the same way. They more or less copied the surface or the shallows of the hippie movement, but without any spiritual or emotional depth. Drugs were less for seeing and hearing God, and more for a fad life style to be cool. Materialism also started to reappear; mid 1970's Disco leisure suit and the Yuppies of the 1980's; party and make money.

The second has to with immigration from the various America war zones in the south east Asia; Viet Nam, the old Atheist Soviet Union Cold War countries who reappeared, and the Middle East. This led to others religion or no religion adding to the averages.

These polls do not include the illegal aliens from South and Central America which are mostly Christian. The Christian numbers should start to rise as these people are sorted out and counted. They still have the platform for their children to learn and become part of the solutions, instead the source of expensive problems. The hippies, grounded in simplicity, showed you do not have to throw money at things; add to debt, to make real changes. That was lost in translation.

In a word -- Knowlege.

Plainly put, you really can't square the knowledge we have, through the sciences, of our world with the world of myth -- aka religion. You see this most clearly in the inverse relationship between higher education and religious affiliation -- the more education, the less religion. The UK is more educated than the US, and has less religious affiliation. Canada, the most educated country in the world (per OECD) is much less religious than either the UK or the UK.

It's interesting to note that the Islam of a thousand years ago saved much of the ancient knowledge of the world during the Dark Ages, when most of Europe was groveling in superstition, and Islam was much more secular than it is today. Now, Islam doesn't bother translating the world's books into its own languages, because it has gone the way of the Dark Ages -- more superstition, less knowledge.

Plus, you know, I'm not convinced that American Christians really, truly have believed much of what they've preached. I mean, Congress couldn't even pass an anti-lynching bill until ---- wait for it ---- 2022! Prior to that, Americans just didn't seem to understand that hanging other humans because of their race wasn't something Jesus really might approve of! So, no, I don't think Americans have ever really believed much of what they preach, only now they seem to be feeling a little more comfortable admitting it to pollsters like the Pew Forum.

I'm not sure what makes sense anymore. When I first saw the three little green icons, I thought they were witches flying across a crescent moon.

Then I thought, maybe they are alligators. That lineage goes back a couple of 100 million years. IDK. With alligator church attendance on the decline, maybe a campaign targeting mice would fill the pews.

I do find mice cute. Especially in small numbers and not in my pantry.

With the advent of multi-colored, neon zebra fish, multi-colored mice, including green, are probably on the cusp of the next genetically-engineered pet trend.

I'm not sure if that would be an advance, or in keeping with the theme of the thread, a decline.

Don't even try to make sense of groups like Westboro Baptist Church -- it can't be done. My own suspicion is that it, like other such, was born of people like Fred Phelps, so burning with desire for that which he believed was sinful, that he went right round the twist! We've seen this with other Baptist Pastors who get caught between the thighs of boys, only to pledge to be "healed" after the fact (see Ted Haggard).

I grew to dislike Christianity as a child. Boring, dreary, meaningless, hymn singing at school. Sunday school - a bunch of miserable colorless oldwomen.

Secondly - Original sin, Noah's ark, virgin birth, son of god, resurrection. How could you accept any one of them, but the whole lot?

Historically, the amount of cruelty and bloodshed just beggars belief.

Past and present, the ridiculous and often vicious obsession with the sex life of consenting adults. Yes, people do have sex when they feel like it and sometimes with people of the same gender. Get over it and get a life.

Finally, I see on RF and elsewhere, the flat earthers, the young earthers, the creationists, and I know that a good common sense solution is a long way off.

I prefer clinging to atheism & guns.
BTW, some Christians I've known even oppose self defense.

We are following the other developed nations in leaving it behind. We were the anomaly so we tend to be last when it comes to that. Also, the Religious Right are turning people against the religion.

This may play a small part of it. But it completely negates that the Spiritual but not religious crowds are a growing trend too. And that Islam is making its headways as the next Global religion.

So people aren't abandoning their old habits for more "scientifically sound" ones (whatever that means).
In Islamic countries, there is no separation of church and state, so they can rule with an iron fist. They don't have the freedom to leave the religion unless they move away.

Fundamentalist religion in developing nations such as African is not generally a good thing. Asia may retain Buddhist or Hindu flavor, so it may not be as bad as it is in Africa.

Humans are creatures of education. Humans are systemactically forced into a secular education since our childhood as enforced by laws in most modern societies. That question boils down is there a lie which critically influenced our mind in this many year long education.

The biggest lie ever introduced through our education system is that, we need evidence to believe stuff to be factual. Atheists are all obessesed with the term evidence with no exception. Evidence however is a delussion. You can simply compile yourself a list of known facts then ask yourself where's your evidence. At the end, you have zero evidence on nothing, as humans (the mass majority) don't rely on evidence to get to truths. In a nutshell, only the extremely small amount of humans nominated as eyewitnesses actually have the evidence, all the rest of humankind actually have is faith!
