The immigrant round up has begun.

The immigrant round up has begun.

No, the illegal immigrant round up has only slightly been undertaken, Big difference there.

Right as they have already started the attack on legal immigrants, with Trump's travel ban, and the RAISE act.

All told, the number of legal immigrants allowed into the United States under the bill — named the Reforming American Immigration for Strong Employment (RAISE) Act — would plummet by 40 percent in the first year and by 50 percent over a decade, according to analysis by Cotton’s aides.

Something needs to be done about illegal immigration, but I think this focus on deportation is misdirected, and a screen for ignoring the much more serious problem of wealth inequality in the country.

They do pay taxes. Quite a lot.
Ah, but I didn't say they don't. I said I would fine them for what they would owe; the collective $2.1 billion "boost" if they were to be legalized, if the article is accurate. However an issue that I take with the Forbes article is that the only source really given is a report that relies on estimations, not accurate reports, and is also based on state and local taxes - I would assume from sales tax on purchases.

um...
Baby steps?
By baby steps do you mean 'ineffective and wasteful steps that don't actually address the reason people come illegally here nor effectively reduce their numbers in the long term'?

There can't be anything but estimation. There's no other way to get this information. But that doesn't mean arbitrary, as the article and source explains in more detail.
Also it isn't (just) sales tax, but income tax taken from wages (because of fake or incorrectly filed socials on tax forms). Which not only means they're paying more taxes than many wealthier individual, but it means they won't be able to get the benefits of social security they pay into. So they pay more and cost less.

Will any of us who aren't rich?

Aside aside, the fact of the matter is that they are here illegally. Contribution to society is all well and fine, but it doesn't amount to much. If I break the law, I can't give the excuse of "But, I contribute! I pay my taxes!" It wouldn't fly. Neither could I say "But my children!" Realistically, if I break the law significantly enough, they'd be taken from me and placed into foster care. As cold-hearted as it may be, I must wonder why that isn't an option - if not even a temporary one while they are immigrated properly - in this situation. When did sympathy circumvent the law?

ah.
right then.
That makes it perfectly OK to illegally enter the country then.

Jaywalking is illegal, should we start deporting jaywalkers, crossing the border should be a misdemeanor IMHO. I'd much rather have illegal immigrants here, than anti immigrant trashtalking nazis, which seem to be more and more of a problem than illegals.

Yes we should.
It will not be as expensive to make the criminal jaywalkers go back across the street.

Good thing it isn't up to you.

Did you have a point or are you merely looking for an excuse to call names and talk trash?

Because the police have to search people indiscriminately to know who is legal and who isn't.
Don't they just have to ask them to produce their papers? That can hardly be considered to be terribly invasive.

This is an educated guess...

The two options are they ask people to produce papers randomly- i.e. Based on suspicision such as skin colour or accent or other possible "signs"- or they do it systematically: the latter is possibly a violation of the fourth amendment against unwarrented searches and seizures. Its also dubious under the fifth amendment because your asking people to bear wittness against themselves, etc.
