'If among you, one of your brothers should become poor, in any of your towns within your land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart or shut your hand against your poor brother, but you shall open your hand to him and lend him sufficient for his need, whatever it may be."

What the Bible Says About Poverty

In the Bible, God speaks often of the poor and needy. He commands us to give generously to the less fortunate and to speak up on their behalf.

To help you connect with God’s heart for the poor, we have compiled this list of Bible verses taken from the New International Version that speak to how God asks us to relate to and serve the less fortunate among us.

Being able to give freely means not being so absorbed in one's own needs that it becomes impossible to look past them at who else is in the world and what they need. Not being absorbed in one's own needs is — even before any generous act happens — a relief. . . .

Generous acts are a relief because they connect. They are always in relationship. They can't be isolating.

For kind thread - becoming a kinder human being

Every time you do something nice for others—without expecting anything in return—you make the world just that much better. Are we saying that putting change in someone else’s parking meter is going to solve the world’s problems? Obviously not. But it will make someone’s day a little brighter. And here’s the funny thing about kindness: It’s contagious. That person might just pay it forward and do something considerate or charitable for somebody else, who might do the same and so on and so forth. (Also, being unkind is the opposite of helpful, yes?)

Showing kindness to others will spark a sense of joy for both parties. If you make kindness part of your daily habits, you’ll do good for your own well-being even without realizing it. You can show kindness to others in various ways, including giving positive compliments, listening to their problems and providing solutions depending on your ability, staying connected to other people, giving care packages from time to time, expressing your empathy, helping your colleagues complete their tasks, babysitting for free and making unexpected and surprise visits to your friends and family. A 2005 study whose objective was to find whether there was a relationship between happiness and kindness found out that the happiest people had actually performed different acts of kindness to others.

Everyone wants their children to be kind and to receive kindness. Seeing kindness in action, doing kind acts and receiving kindness makes us feel good.

Would you like to increase acts of kindness in your classroom or at home?

Here’s how you can do just that and increase the wellbeing of your children.

But first a dose of science…

Yes, I’m a science geek and I strive to have a solid science base for all of the interventions ( fancy word for activities ) that I recommend to you.

To be happier, try a little more kindness

In her insightful book The How of Happiness psychologist Sonja Lyubomirsky describes how acts of kindness can enhance the happiness and wellbeing, not only of the receiver, but of the giver as well. In one experiment, participants were asked to consciously perform everyday acts of kindness like holding the door open for somebody, sending flowers to a friend, visiting a sick relative etc. for a period of six weeks. The first group was asked to do five acts of kindness spread randomly across the week. The second group was asked to perform five acts in a single day per week. At the end of every week, the researchers obtained data from the participants that described their well-intentioned acts.

To the researchers’ surprise, only the second group that performed five kind acts on a single day per week exhibited a considerable increase in their happiness levels. Lyubomirsky speculates that this might be due to the fact that most of us routinely perform small acts of kindness every now and then. However, to experience a significant fillip to our happiness, the acts need to stand out. In other words, we need to do more than what we typically do.

How Helping Others can improve your wellbeing -

Even the smallest act can count, whether it’s a smile, a “thank you” or a kind word. Larger acts, such as volunteering at your local community centre, can also make a difference to the life of others and your own.

Whether large or small, helping others can make you feel happier and more satisfied with life, and strengthen or build your relationships with others.

"Beginning today, treat everyone you meet as if they were going to be dead by midnight. Extend to them all the care, kindness and understanding you can muster, and do it with no thought of any reward. Your life will never be the same again."
