The Kindness Box

Quote by Maintenanceman

I worked today, and I saw 50 plus residents have ‘Thanksgiving’ in a nursing home. Some had family there, some did not. But all where fed well , but there are places all over the world where old and crippled and dying are left for others to care for. The jobs are not easy, and many times seemingly not rewarding, but the fact is that basic needs are being met by great (and even not so great) care givers in the US and I imagine in many places all over the world.

I am thankful for the system here in the USA (even though I get so perturbed at the bureaucracy) that takes care of these folks. If you have the time, visit your local nursing home or hospital, see some folks that don’t have family, say hi, talk a bit and make their day. It will be rewarding for both of you.

“I know most people want others to have good lives, and, when they understand the situation, they will do what they can to steer the world back toward kindness. This is when human beings, I believe, are most admirable.” - Daoud Hari

“For the multifold secret to work only one thing is necessary. You must take action. You must give. You must share. You must act with abandon. Send out waves of love and kindness into the world and then simply wait for the response. Or, better yet, continue to send out more waves. Why wait? The response will come. Keep sending waves and enjoy the reaction.” - John Kremer

“Kindness is like a muscle, the more we exercise it the better we are at it.

Kindness starts as a thought but ends as an action. Acting kindly toward others is the only real way to let people know we care about them and their happiness. Without action, kindness just lives in our minds but never touches the real world.

Being kind to others doesn’t have to be complex or fancy. Sometimes the simplest acts of kindness are seen as the most sincere, such as holding the door, helping with directions, saying “please” and “thank you,” or even just a smile.” - Steven Handel

“Every kindness we have done is a monument built in our name in the heart of God!” - Mehmet Murat ildan

“We need to spread more seeds and fill this Planet with love to be surrounded by flowers just everywhere! It starts by simply opening up our hearts and hands to one another. It's in simple things where true Happiness may flourish. - Ana Claudia Antunes

“Lift up your eyes and see the good in the world, for we are people with an amazing capacity to do great good. And if only the minority choose to exercise this capacity to the smallest degree, oh how wondrous and sweet the deeds performed at but a few hands!” - Richelle E. Goodrich

“But deep this truth impress'd my mind:
Thro' all His works abroad,
The heart benevolent and kind
The most resembles God.” - Robert Burns

“The real trouble is that 'kindness' is a quality fatally easy to attribute to ourselves on quite inadequate grounds. Everyone feels benevolent if nothing happens to be annoying him at the moment. Thus a man easily comes to console himself for all his other vices by a conviction that 'his heart's in the right place' and 'he wouldn't hurt a fly,' though in fact he has never made the slightest sacrifice for a fellow creature."- C.S. Lewis

“When we live in the love of God, we begin to pay attention to people the way God pays attention to us.” - John Ortberg

Kindness is the first of the three great treasures advocated by Lao Tzu. The Buddha taught that generosity is a primary quality of an awakened mind. Muhammad regarded kindness as an essential sign of faith. Jewish and Christian ethics are built upon deeds of kindness, as are the daily interactions of people of primal traditions.

The spiritual practice of kindness encompasses a range of small acts and habits that we know as old-fashioned good manners — saying "please" and "thank you," waiting your turn, lending a helping hand, or cheering someone up with a smile. It applies not just to your relationships with other people. Etiquette in the spiritual life extends to things, animals, plants, and the Earth.

Tried a quick search of the word kindfulness -

Kindest regards

We’re heading into a kindness revival – which is no bad thing. It’s down to the ever-growing trend of mindfulness, but perhaps not in the way you’d think. The rise of being mindful (y’know, cultivating an awareness of your present surroundings, inner thoughts and emotions) has been proven time and time again to have a very real positive effect on your mental and physical health. And yet there’s a growing concern that practising the Buddhist tradition as a standalone concept, without the warmth, goodwill and generosity (read: kindness) that Buddhists practise alongside it, means that we’re not only missing the point, but also doing our mental health a disservice.

“Mindfulness without kindness becomes dry, boring and cold,” says expert Shamash Alidina. “But when you switch the focus to ‘kindfulness’, it reminds you to be forgiving and friendly as you carry out mindfulness, so you’re able to get the very best out of it.”
