When money was interesting and before inflation...
2 farthings = 1 halfpenny
2 halfpence = 1 penny (1d)
3 pence = 1 thruppence (3d)
6 pence = 1 sixpence (a 'tanner') (6d)
12 pence = 1 shilling (a bob) (1s)
2 shillings = 1 florin ( a 'two bob bit') (2s)
2 shillings and 6 pence = 1 half crown (2s 6d)
5 shillings = 1 Crown (5s)
I recall my first trip to Pisa, in November 2004.
I was with my cousin and her fiancé...we were travelling alone.
We arrive at the square of Miracles. Where the tower of Pisa is.
I want to come up to the top of the Tower.
My cousin wants too.
All of a sudden we see a quite robust (quite, let's see very) woman who was entering the gates of the tower.
All of a sudden...my cousin freaks out and screams : "No...if she is coming up, I am not going. I don't wanna die. Towers do collapse (a reference to recent 9 11)"...
The way she shouted that...the way people stared at her red angry face...I burst out laughing.
I imagined the scene of the tower collapsing because of that woman's weight.
My cousin yelled at me "stop laughing, you moron!"...and people staring at the scene.
And all that scene made me laugh even louder...
So that my cousin was telling passers-by " dont worry...my cousin is crazy...she is laughing all alone".
And more laughter...I laughed and laughed.
I could not stop laughing. My cousin and her bf went to a bar.
And tourists at that place could see a person (me) laughing all alone on a bench.
And they were really weirded out.
The funniest experience in my life.
Ah...some hours later...I did visit the tower.
