The expression 8.999.... *means* the thing that is approximated by 8.9, 8.99, 8.999. 8.9999, etc. That thing is 9, so

9=8.999....

There is no way to put an infinite number of 0s after the decimal place and before a 1.

Note my reply also had ellipses. It does matter how far you go into infinity there is always a difference between 9 and 8.999..
