I love Paris* in the springtime...

It's the only time of year the sewers don't smell.

* And Naples.
* And Sorrento (there is even an area of Sorrento nicknamed the drains

I thought that all sewers smelled. Not that I typically spend much time in sewers, but that's what I've heard. A few times I've been in buildings where there appeared some strong odor attributed to sewer gas, which is rather unpleasant.

I can imagine some of the older cities in Europe have sewer systems dating back to Roman times. I presume they've probably upgraded them since those times.

Yes they all smell but some smell worse than others and the smell escapes, develops a mind of its own and goes hunting for people to offend !-)

I've spent some time on relatives' hog farms, and the smell is pretty strong when you first get there. But after a day or so, you get used to it to the point where you don't really smell it anymore. Thinking on that, I wonder how many smells and toxic odors have become so commonplace that we don't really notice it anymore.

I think it's tourists who get out the scented hanky

Hmm something to think about. I know hubby can make some horrendous smelle and i never get used to them ;-)

All left-over perfume is dumped down the, um, to use a more highbrow reference, the oubliette?
