A bit nippy out this morning. 47°, although they say it "feels like" 46°. Today's high is expected to be 72°. Great day for a picnic.

Another tantrum that lasted hours.

Another ER visit.

But! This time they gave him a shot to calm him down(ativan?)

It worked for... an hour? And then he went back to his fit. Because the bank won't give him a debit card. Because he's 9.

They told me in the ER there's no services in this area for children. They can ship him out hours away, but that isn't what they'd recommend. Must be disciplinary, they assume.

Nah, this isn't me. We've been doing the same thing we've always done, but at some point this last summer someone traded my normally spunky but naughty child for a wild rabid wolverine. Something's going on. Its not hyperactivity. Something's wrong, but no one has any answers.

Me too. This is nuts. When he's good, he's good. When he's not, I'd rather deal with an aggressive and armed political mob.

Kid was attacking my friend and I for over an hour over this stupid debit card. I eventually called a relative to take us to the ER. The Doc there gave me a bunch of technical options, and I got frustrated and told him I didn't know what he was saying. He spoke louder, but I told him I didn't understand the meaning of the words. Then he understood, and we got somewhere. Sadly, he said, there is just nothing they can do for kids in this area.

At least he threw a fit for them, too. Normally he calms down in the ER. He threw his membership card the bank gave him, kicked the walls, beat on me, yelled, screamed.

I don't know much about autism other than talking to the kid next door, he's 10 and comes to apologise to me after a tantrum. I asked him why once after he'd broken his mother's thumb and he said he just gets angry sometimes but doesn't know why.

I'm really sorry to hear this. I was hopeful after the drug problem was discovered he'd quiet down.

I don't know that it's possible for you but I think he needs a complete work-up looking at multiple possibilities. Google "bard" listed a whole host of possibilities starting with various psychological issues but including seizures, migraines, ear infections, dental pain and food allergies. "ChatGPT" added sleep disorders.

Maybe you're already keeping a log, but If not I wonder if there is a pattern that a detailed diary might discover?

Autism seems to work differently for everyone, which makes it all the more confusing. My oldest is autistic, too, but they're entirely different.

Sleep is a big issue. The first time we went to the ER was for sleep. He'd stay up all night doing the 'sing-song kick over the furniture and scratch Mom's face up' stuff. The ER gave him a melatonin. That was a turn around. We were able to get a bedtime routine down with him, and most nights go well. The only time we have issue is if his brother accidentally wakes him on the way to school, and then he's weird again.

And of course, the melatonin, the only med that I am actually certain works, is the one med the Doc wants to cut. "Its not good for him to take long term." Oh, but an adult's dose of antipsychotic, some of the heaviest drugs they have to offer, is?

I've thought about asking the Doc for a general health check up, just to rule out anything that Ares can't communicate. He can talk, loves to talk, but communication is difficult for him. He could have a bladder infection, or stomach issue, and not be able to say otherwise.

I've got a log in a private forum here on the site.

I've read what that Doc said as well. But I wondered if he was relying on anything scientific. Chronic Administration of Melatonin: Physiological and Clinical Considerations does not show that concern.
It seems the information I've read is mixed. Some are for, some are against.

I wouldn't object working him off it someday. But only once I don't have to worry about waking to a BANG(throwing stuff), manic laughter and getting kicked in the face when I go to see what's wrong. Right now, him getting solid sleep is of the utmost importance.

Such events were almost nightly before the melatonin. Maybe once a month now.
