Sam made quite a spectacle(his costume), and someone told him to go buy new pants, and threw money at him.

However, I disagree. If you are smart and poor you would know it and lament it. If you are smart and rich or dumb and rich, you just don't care either way.

I don't know. We lean towards 'poor'. Not completely destitute, but bills get juggled at times, not everything that needs fixed, is. I don't lament it. But it might because I'm too dumb to do so.
