Of course its somewhat remarkable that they made everything what they made with rather primitive tools but at the same time its rather sad as it shows that they were doomed to be conquered and subdued.

It simply shows how they werent advancing and thats bad.

Being advanced is no protection from being conquered and subdued. The most advanced empire in the world can fall due to the whims of one stupid king. Rome managed to conquer several people that were, in many ways, far more advanced than it, and yet when it was itself the most advanced, poor governmental management caused its provinces to be powerless against the Tribes.

I don't think that they subdivide history as we Westerners do....that is

ancient history 3500 BC-476 AD
middle ages 476-1492
modern age 1492-1789
present age 1789- now
Speaking as an Indian and a Hindu, why subdivide history? It is one big flowing continuum. :D

However, my definition of civilized people, whether living in villages or cities, would be how much they could avoid violence? That is, IMHO the real measure of being civilized.

I don't think I'd ever really seen a civilization I would call enlightened before. And I also don't know what the most civilized entails... the most people were conditioned to perform a function in a larger society? I don't even think that its a great thing in any and all cases.

Regarding societies around the world at various points, they all seem pretty... disappointingly humanesque. But they all have their pros and cons, and there are many things about human history worthy of admiration, IMO, included all the aforementioned cultures.

I don't really see human cultures being somewhat a measurement of advanced human calculation. Societies are driven by external pressures.
