I asked this question elsewhere: how do you think a Democrat could win Utah? If one campaigned and gave support behind the Mormon church?
You mean specifically the presidential race? You know that the mayor of SLC is a Dem, right? Not just a Dem, a decided liberal.

Salt Lake County's mayor is a democrat also and is winning reelection with about 66% of the vote. My county representative and US representative are Democrats. Salt Lake City's mayor isn't as liberal as Rocky Anderson was (thank god), but he is a democrat.

Utah's Republican governor is winning reelection with 77% of the vote right now. He's pretty popular...

How is that possible? I'm curious because I'd like to see Utah go blue one day - or at least not red.

Here is the good mayor's web page on diversity and human rights:
Mayor's Office of Diversity

Note the references to Pride week and transgender awareness. :)

My understanding is that while Utah is decidedly conservative, Salt Lake City is relatively liberal. I think that's just the nature of cities.

I wouldn't say that Salt Lake is liberal. I think it has a good balance of liberal, moderate, and conservative. There is a pretty large University here and a very young population which contributes to the diversity.

I couldn't help but compare what I heard coming from McCain's mouth to what I remember from the 2000 election nightmare. I honestly didn't vote for a single democrat in 2004 because of the way the party accepted the 2000 defeat. I think a lot of others felt that way also and wonder how much the 2000 fiasco carried over into 2004.

McCain's speech won't hurt the Republicans in 2012. I thought it was very encouraging for bringing our country back together.

Hey, I said relatively liberal. :) It's liberal enough to elect a mayor that supports BGLT rights. :)

Whereas I STILL think that election was stolen and that Gore caved too easily.

McCain was gracious, but you have to admit that Obama's victory was far more decisive.

Well, I'm late to the party, but I'm happy to report that there's cheering in the streets here in Portland.

As bad a president as Bush may have been, I'm still glad he was elected over Gore. :p

Obama's victory was much more decisive. He was a better candidate than Gore, Bush, McCain, or Kerry. Hopefully, he'll be able to live up to the expectations!
