His words in this ring hollow for me... It doesn't make sense.
Maybe he just realalises that atheists are human beings too, and often enough, more moral than mr or mrs average christian

This pope also said on a different occasion that atheists go to Heaven if they're good people. Video Link
There's a move on now that includes some 16 bishops in the catholic church to have pope Francis declared a heretic.
Conservatives want Catholic bishops to denounce pope as heretic
There's someone in media in Rome that writes articles carrying unsubstantiated claims of things the pope has said . None of these interviews are recorded. It appears the man is dedicated to smearing the pope. Or he's looking to pile on false claims thinking they're be believed behind what unusual decrees the pope has actually made.
Like that reporters claim the pope said there is no Hell. Video Link
I didn't expect that. This pope also said on a different occasion that atheists go to Heaven if they're good people. Video Link

No stereotypes involved. So you're into stereotyping? Can you explain how that in any way is moral?
You are not the one defining Heresy.I've never seen someone walk so close to the edge of heresy, for so long.
Hmm... not sure how to take the Pope's words. Probably my experience with too many snide remarks from theists where it was immediately claimed by the person that "that's not what was saying!" when called out on it. But what I see is that he's saying that you're better off not believing (and therefore, by implication, completely lacking a strict moral code) so that you are at least not being hypocritical and can "get away with" whatever actions/words that would be hypocritical for a Christian. In being an atheist you are at least not breaking the moral code of a "real" Christian with poor actions/words. Seems like it could be a cheap shot to me.
Pope Francis said in his first General Audience of 2019 that it is better to be an atheist than a churchgoing Christian who hates other people. In 2017, he suggested it was better for one to be an atheist than a Catholic who leads a hypocritical double life.
Wow, a Pope who is calling out those who claim to be Christian.
You are not the one defining Heresy.
You must be referring to the Trump supporters. [sorry-- just had to post that]Our brains have shrunk in 20+ thousand years.
And, the Pope is wrong, if you've quoted him correctly! It's better IMHO to have eternal life, having been a hypocrite, than to have been an atheist!
Except that's not being honest yourself in any way, as you are using stereotyping matched with bigotry....the Pope, who runs a den of hypocrites IMHO,
No surprise you'd come back with something like the above, so it seems that dishonesty now dovetails with your use of stereotyping while you try to claim some sort of moral high-ground vis-a-vis the Pope and the RCC. Your post screams "hypocrisy" as it is no more moral that what the utterly immoral pedophile priests were doing, thus your attempt above to fight immorality with just more immorality. No stereotypes involved.

Our brains are somewhat smaller than with Homo sapiens neanderthalensis but pretty much on par with the early Homo sapiens sapiens. The skull configuration that differs between the two is different though, with Hss having a higher forehead, which probably relates to having a larger cerebrum, even though it's certainly not true with the Trump supporters. [dang. I did it again!-- the devil made me post this!]

My point was that the Pope's words were possibly yet another attempt (possibly unintentional) at making the derogatory statement that atheists have no moral code. Meaning that he's saying "It's better to have no moral code (and be like an atheist) than to state that you have a moral code yet disregard it."So what is the difference between a christian adhering to the selectively watered down christian moral code and an atheist adhering to the moral code that helped build civilisation and thus allow religions to flourish a bastardise the moral code to exclude anyone not in their club?

I would obviously argue that each atheist has their own, individual moral code. But I would probably also argue that so does each Christian - hence the perceived problem in the Pope's (among other people's) eyes. Catholic/Christian theists aren't supposed to utilize their own moral discernment, apparently.
So, to answer your question, the difference is what you sort of implied - the theist thinks they have "God on their side", and so their personal (and still individual) moral code becomes God's personal moral code. If you don't abide, you're out.

You missed the attribution: Christian Post 4 Jan 2019.Why should any atheist care what the Pope says about them?
Why should any atheist care that the Pope, who runs a den of hypocrites IMHO, says about their hypocrisy or any Christian's hypocrisy?

Of course not, otherwise it makes them harder control. Murder the Cathars, conquer the Holy Land, vote for Trump.Catholic/Christian theists aren't supposed to utilize their own moral discernment, apparently.
