The Problem with Internet Porn

Rational Agnostic

Well-Known Member
I think that Internet porn can be harmless and entertaining on occasion, but far more commonly it has the potential to cause problems, and wreak havoc on the minds of viewers. One problem is its accessibility. With the click of a mouse, and with no monetary cost, one can get access to unlimited, on-demand videos of sex acts, depicting almost any fetish imaginable. This is disconcerting to me, because it seems like it would have the potential to rapidly desensitize viewers to the mystique of sex. Additionally, porn completely removes the love aspect of intimacy by removing the most important aspect of sexuality, which is the physical connection with another human being. The last time I visited a pornographic site, the number one thing that I noticed was the sheer number of videos available, and how much time could be consumed (and ultimately wasted) by watching all of these videos, so I left the website, and decided to rarely, if ever, visit such websites again. What is the solution? I am not sure. I'm not advocating for government regulation of pornography, as I think it falls under freedom of expression. Yet, the abundance and easy accessibility of unlimited, free porn on the Internet is concerning to me. At the very least, awareness should be raised about its negative potential.

Porn degrades the human creative capacity.

Are people incapable of using their imaginations?

You can see whatever you want in your mind.

For free. Whenever you want.

Seriously, use it.

If I'm a music composer or a fine-arts artist how is my "creative capacity" degraded if I participate in or watch porn? And how do you know?

Are people incapable of using their imaginations?
Nope.

You can see whatever you want in your mind.
Really? Think you could imagine the Mona Lisa or The Starry Night or Tchaikovsky's Waltz of the Flowers without first having seen or heard them?

For free. Whenever you want.
Seriously, use it.
Gee, thanks, Now I'll never have to spend money on movies, the theater, sporting events, or music because I can imagine them all.

I was being facetious and you misunderstood. I was speaking purely in sexual terms. One can use the creative power of imagination to imagine such scenes.

Well sure. A sculptor or a painter works often from pure imagination. They see it in their heads first.

Sure! I do it all day every day. I create intricately detailed fantasy worlds in my head with characters, settings, backstories, antagonists, rituals and so on. I can follow it in my head like a film for months or years. I find it much better than movies because I can have whatever I want to happen, as detailed as I want, creating the emotions that I want to feel at any time. I can also develop a greater emotional connexion to the characters and their experiences.

Err, do you really believe that just because porn is easily accessible that it rapidly desensitize viewers to the mystique of sex?
Easy accessibility = rapid desensitization? Personally, I think it would take a lot more than that.

Additionally, porn completely removes the love aspect of intimacy by removing the most important aspect of sexuality, which is the physical connection with another human being.
Boy, from the porn I've seen, physical connection is a top priority.

The last time I visited a pornographic site, the number one thing that I noticed was the sheer number of videos available, and how much time could be consumed (and ultimately wasted) by watching all of these videos, so I left the website, and decided to rarely, if ever, visit such websites again.
If the number of videos is the number one thing you noticed when visiting a porn site, then porn sure ain't for you.

What is the solution? I am not sure.
Considering your lack of interest in porn, I think the solution would be obvious: don't visit porn sites.

I'm not advocating for government regulation of pornography, as I think it falls under freedom of expression. Yet, the abundance and easy accessibility of unlimited, free porn on the Internet is concerning to me. At the very least, awareness should be raised about its negative potential.
It's negative potential being that it "seems" to you to rapidly desensitize viewers to the mystique of sex. Just be thankful we don't enact legislation because of what things seem to be.

So then you don't believe porn degrades the human creative capacity at all? Good!

Oh I thought the complaint was going to be about it not being in 3D. Never mind.

I think your views are far more applicable to those susceptible to social dysfunction and an obsession disorder.

I think restricting natural sexual behavior is more dangerous. Granted I am of the opinion that it is too accessible. There should be more educational porn cause I think big porn stars would be more "relatable" than the crap jobs those actual sex ed videos do.

Porn is evil. It is based on selfish hedonism. It is evil because it is based on a lie that the self is paramount when it is not. There is no such thing as “free porn”. Porn always carries a price. It isn’t always monetary. Sometimes the prices comes in wrecked relationships, destroyed psyches, or even suicide.

Thankfully that is true. Even better is that eternal truths still hold. Porn was evil before and it is still evil. Selfishness is still a root of much human suffering.
If anything it lessens human suffering. Where do you get these ideas from? They are not supported by observation. Plus you have quite a few unsupported accusations. You need to be able to support them. It can be shown that rape decreases when porn is legal. Porn is not for single guys, women watch, couples watch it, even married couples use porn to make their sex lives better. How it is it "evil"?

Maybe the suicide is a byproduct of your hate speech.

I wonder what kind of porn is on your hard drive.
