Tonight I got to tell four kids that mom's not coming. She called like maybe four minutes before I had to cancel the visitation, and as I was talking to her, I could tell the kids knew who I was talking to, they knew what was going on, and I could see the heartbreak and devastation on their faces before I even ended the call.

I don't think I've ever been so thankful to be impaired when it comes to feeling empathy. Sure, I understood why they were hurting, I gave them my sympathy, but if I had to actually feel any of it I would have been crushed.
