I went to bed way too early last night, so now I wake up too early. I'll probably go back to bed later.

Gypsy moths to get name change due to view the name could be offensive

The destructive tree defoliating, white and brown patterned gypsy moth will be receiving a name change due to views that the name could be offensive.

The Entomological Society of America will strike the name of the moth and similarly named gypsy ant from its “Common Names of Insects and Related Organisms List.”

According to a press release, “The changes are made in conjunction with the launch of a new ESA program to review and replace insect common names that may be inappropriate or offensive.”

The scientific Latin name for the moth, lymantria dispar, and the ant, aphaenogaster araneoides, will officially be used to identify the insects until ESA releases new common names.

ESA President Michelle S. Smith states that common names are used “to make communication easier between scientists and the public audiences they serve. By and large, ESA’s list of recognized insect common names succeeds in this regard, but names that are unwelcoming to marginalized communities run directly counter to that goal.”

ESA seeks assistance from the public, insect experts and scientists in related fields to help rename the bugs.

The lymantria dispar has a large presence in Massachusetts. The insects caused hundreds of thousands of acres worth of defoliation between 2017 and 2018.

New Englanders still consider the bug a nuisance during the summer.

So, they're seeking assistance from the public to help rename the bugs.

Any ideas? Nixon's Nits? Trump's Tramps? @Wu Wei's Wacky Doodles? @Revoltingest's Wretched Wreckers?

I'm glad I'm overly sensitive and didn't cut Family Guy out of my life, because I can definitely relate more to Ida than that ***** attention whore Jenner.

A conversation overheard in a drought ridden state.....
Bob: Who's yer daddy?
@Shadow Wolf: He's a Hoosier Daddy.

This came to mind while driving Mr Van today.
Nah. He's whatever you call someone from Ohio. My mom is the Hoosier. Although it would be better if that were reversed because we look nothing alike and I've often called the "milkman's baby." Then it could be "Hoosier daddy? **** if I know."
