After posting that comment about Kzinti earrings, it occurred to me that not everyone is a fan of or perhaps even knows about the Man-Kzin wars shared worlds books.
The Kzinti are very large felinoids, cat like people, who are very war like. After killing the enemy they cut off an ear, preserve it and put the ear on a ring that shows their prowess at killing by the number of ears on the ring.
For those that are interested, in later stories the Kzinti become less one dimensional killing machines in an analogous way to the Borg becoming less one dimensional in later Trek stories.
